Missal illustration: St. Cecile

Potewatemi Neme'winin ipi Nemenigamowinin
Potawatomi Prayers and Hymns

by Rev. Maurice Gailland, S.J.
1866

Background

The Rev. Maurice Gailland (pronounced "guy-own") was a Catholic priest who, along with fellow Jesuit Christian Hoecken, studied the language for the purpose of converting Kansas Potawatomis to Christianity. Gailland also produced several Potawatomi grammars, a dictionary and translations of some of the scriptures used in Catholic masses throughout the year; none of these were ever printed, but survive in manuscript form.

This text is a small book of prayers and hymns, 119 pages long, with a black cover. The picture of St. Cecile above is the frontispiece. The copy in our collection has a name inscribed in it, Madeline Aitkens, of Mayetta, Kans., and the date, Sept. 8, 1940.
