Descendants of Nicolas Pelletier
Here are two branches of my family tree, first the longest, because it is most easily traced, the French line. The second table is the Menominee line.
Unfortunately, all I have been able to discover about my Potawatomi ancestors before Shanote married into the Vieux family is the name of her father, my fourth great grandfather, Chesaugan, and the name of his known son, Peter. Notes on Potawatomi Ancestors
Shanote was the daughter of Chesaugan, a headman of the St. Joseph Band whose signature can be found on five Potawatomi treaties, including the 1795 Treaty of Greenville. Chesaugan and three other members of the family were forcibly removed from Twin Lakes IN to Linn County Kansas in September 1838 on what came to be called the Trail of Death. At the time he owned 8 acres of land, planted in corn, outside Chief Menominee's village. It was confiscated and burned. After the Removal, he remained in Kansas and is presumed to have died near Indianola, north of Topeka.
Shanote had one known brother, Pom-mem-ke-tuck, who was known as Peter the Great. I believe he was active in tribal affairs in Kansas. I have a copy of his will in which he leaves his belongings to nieces and nephews. Although he married, his wife predeceased him and apparently there were no children.
From Shanote on, we have been enrolled Potawatomi.
Jacques Vieux spelled his name Vieau and half of his offspring kept that spelling while those who went to Kansas changed it to Vieux. I kept the Kansas spelling because it was the way I first encountered it when I began my genealogy research.
