AUDIOVISUAL HOLDINGS


The audiovisual collection of the Eisenhower Library constitutes a valuable documentary
resource relating to the life and times of Dwight D. Eisenhower.  To date, the Library has
accessioned 309,762 still photographs, 537 motion picture films (16mm), 78 motion picture
films (35mm), 11 motion picture films (8mm), 188 video tapes and 2,662 audio tapes and discs. 
The materials have been received from private individuals, private organizations, and
government agencies.


STILL PHOTOGRAPHS

Most photographic materials in the holdings of the Eisenhower Library were received as part of manuscript collections and are arranged and identified by the name of donor. The following is a listing of the major photographic collections in the Library. Some smaller collections (under 50 items) of less interest have not been included.
ABILENE REFLECTOR-CHRONICLE NEWSPAPER.  Photographs taken by the
Reflector-Chronicle staff photographer which document official activities at the Eisenhower
Center. 1952-1983.  250 items.

ADKINS, BERTHA S.  Photographs of Adkins, her family and friends.  Most of the
photographs document her involvement with the Republican National Committee (1948-58) and
the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (1958-60).  1907-1970.  293 items.

ALLEN, GEORGE E.  Candid photographs of Dwight D. Eisenhower vacationing with family
and friends.  1949-1960.  23 items.

ALLEN, TERRY DE LA M.  Photographs of the First and 104th Infantry Divisions
involvement in World War II.  1943-1945.  23 items.

AURAND, EVAN P.  Photographs of Aurand, his family, and friends.  Most of the photographs
document his naval career which included four years as Naval Aide to the President (1957-61).

AURAND, HENRY S.  Photographs of Aurand, his family and friends.  Most of the
photographs document his military career.  1894-1967.  2321 items.

BACON, EDWARD A.  Photographs documenting Bacon's official trips to Panama for the
Canal Zone dedication, the Far East, New Zealand, Antarctica, and functions at the Pentagon.

BARNES, BERT B.  Photographs regarding United States Post Office official ceremonies and
modernization of postal services.  1953-1959.  43 items.

BEACH, EDWARD L.  Photographs of Beach, his family and friends.  Most of the photographs
document his naval career, excluding the four years he served as Naval Aide to the President
(1953-57).  1917-1961.  332 items.

BEACH, EDWARD L. AND EVAN P. AURAND, NAVAL AIDES TO THE PRESIDENT.
Photographs documenting presidential trips, vacations, residences and offices occupied by the
President and his staff outside Washington, D.C., meetings with heads of state, and official
ceremonies.  1953-1961.  2174 items.

BEGLEY, PAUL.  Photographs taken by Begley while serving as an official Naval staff
photographer assigned to documenting the official activities of the President.  1953-1957.  
100 items.

BRERETON, LEWIS H.  Photographs documenting U.S. Army aviation, such as the first
Signal Corps Aviation Class of 1912 which included Brereton.  Most of the photographs concern
World War II aerial operations.  1912-1966.  57 items.

BRIGGS, RUTH M.  World War II principals, Allied soldiers, Nazi prisoners of war, European
battlefronts and civilians, and the Tehran Conference are a few of the subjects of the photographs
collected by Briggs while serving as General Walter Bedell Smith's secretary during World War
II.  1942-1945.  352 items.

BROWN, LILLIAN H.  Photographs collected by Brown, Mrs. Eisenhower's secretary, include
snapshots taken of the Eisenhowers during their 1962 European trip.  1962-1968.  69 items.

BUSINESS ARCHIVES COUNCIL OF CANADA.  Views of Mount Eisenhower in the
Canadian Rockies and vicinity, including photographs of the Prince of Wales (1929).  1929-1960.  94 items.

BUTCHER, HARRY C.  Photographs collected by Butcher which document official events of
World War II as well as the informal aspects of Eisenhower's headquarters in North Africa and
Europe.  1942-1946.  949 items.

CANNON, C. CRAIG.  Photographs of Eisenhower's family and friends taken primarily by
Cannon.  1941-1951.  340 items.

CARLSON, JOSEPH W.  Photographs documenting engineering work at Normandy. 1944.

CHESNEY, EARLE D.  Photographic reproductions of Chesney's cartoons of Eisenhower
administration officials and events.  1954-1961.  132 items.

construction of the Mulberry and Gooseberry artifical harbors.  1944.  491 items.

COCHRAN, JACQUELINE.  Photographs of Cochran's family, friends, and business
associates.  Most document her career in aviation and her involvement with the Eisenhower

COOK, RICHARD W.  Photographs documenting Cook's career which included seven years
with the Atomic Energy Commission (1951-58).  1944-1973.  35 items.

COTA, NORMAN D.  Photographs of Cota, his family and friends.  Most of the photographs
document his military career during World War II.  1911-1967.  127 items.

DAVIS, THOMAS JEFFERSON.  Photographs of Davis with Eisenhower while serving in the
Philippines (1935-39) and during World War II.  1935-1946.  22 items.

DECKER, JOHN.  Photographs of the Okinawa campaign.  1944-1945.  79 items.

DES MOINES REGISTER-TRIBUNE NEWSPAPER.  Photographs documenting World
War II taken by news services, military and free lance photographers.  Also includes a section on
the Eisenhower presidency.  1937-1969.  80,000 items.

DICK, NINA.   Photographs of Dick documenting her career as an Army nurse.  1941-1945.

DICKINSON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY.  Photographs documenting Dickinson

business associates.  Includes photographs documenting her career in government (1942-62).

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER BOYHOOD HOME.  Photographs collected by Ida and David
Eisenhower of family and friends.  1800-1946.  350 items.

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER LIBRARY: STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER.  Photographs taken
by the Library's staff photographer of official functions, personnel, and the Center's exhibits and
buildings. 1962- .   300 items.

EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D.: PRE-PRESIDENTIAL, (1916-52).  Photographs collected by
Eisenhower and his staff of family, friends, military associates and historical events.  A
significant amount of the photographs are Operation Overlord battle maps.  1916-1952.  528
items.

EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D.: PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (ANN
WHITMAN FILE) (1953-61).  Photographs from the manuscript collection maintained during
his administration by Eisenhower's personal secretary. These photographs document the political
and personal activities of the President, and contain portraits of U.S. and foreign government
officials.  1953-1961.  1000 items.

EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D.: PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (WHITE
HOUSE CENTRAL FILES) (1953-61).  Photographs from the White House Central Files
manuscript collection sent to Eisenhower from the general public, government agencies and
business associates.  The photographs primarily cover the years 1953-61, although earlier
historical photographs are also included in this collection.  1839-1961.  250 items.

level meetings with foreign officials and activities of the President.  1942-1961.  3000 items.

HEISS, GERSON.  Photographs collected by Heiss while serving in North Africa during World
War II.  Includes photographs of inspection tours by Eisenhower.  1943.  169 items.

HOBBS, LELAND.  Photographs of Hobbs documenting his military career and including
photographs of his family and friends.  1943-1957.  390 items.

HOBBY, OVETA CULP.  Photographs documenting activities of the Health, Education and
Welfare Department (1953-55) with the exception of a few photographs of Hobby during her
military career.  1945-1955.  150 items.

HODGES, COURTNEY HICKS.  Photographs documenting Hodges' military career.  Many of
the photographs document the First Army's activities during World War II.  1911-1965.

MISCELLANEOUS  PHOTOGRAPHS.  Photographs of Eisenhower, his family, and others
donated to the Library by numerous private individuals or organizations at various times and from
many countries.  Many of these items document memorial services or memorials in honor of the
Eisenhowers.  The donations vary in type from snapshots to formal portrait photographs made by
Bachrach, Thames and others.  1857-1984.  40,720 items.

MITCHELL, JAMES P.  Photographs documenting Mitchell's activities as Assistant Secretary of
the Army for Manpower and Reserve Forces (1953) and as Secretary of Labor (1953-61).  1953-1961.  522 items.

NEW YORK HERALD-TRIBUNE.  Photographs provided by various news agencies and the New

QUESADA, ELWOOD R.  Photographs documenting his career and interest in aviation, from the
1920s through his position as Administrator of the Federal Aviation Agency (1958-61).  The
collection contains photographs of historical interest regarding air operations of World War II.

J. Lawton Collins.  1944-1945.  196 items.

WASHBURN, C. LANGHORNE.  Photographs of Washburn, his family, friends and business

WAUGH, SAMUEL C.  Photographs of Waugh, his family, friends and business associates. 
The majority of the photographs document his terms as Assistant Secretary of State (1953-55);
Deputy Under Secretary of State (1955); president and chairman of the board of the Export-Import Bank (1955-61).  1953-1970.  1326 items. 

WHITE HOUSE OFFICE, OFFICE OF THE SPECIAL ASSISTANT FOR SCIENCE
AND TECHNOLOGY (JAMES R. KILLIAN AND GEORGE B.  KISTIAKOWSKY).  The
majority of the photographs are portraits of department personnel.  1957-1961.  67 items.

WHITE HOUSE OFFICE, OFFICE OF THE STAFF SECRETARY (PAUL T.
CARROLL, ANDREW J. GOODPASTER, L. ARTHUR MINNICH AND
CHRISTOPHER H. RUSSELL).  The majority of the photographs are portraits of department
personnel.  1952-1961.  94 items.

WHITE HOUSE OFFICE, SOCIAL OFFICE.  The majority of the photographs are
reproductions of photographs of the Eisenhowers prior to the presidency.  1915-1961.  687 items.

WORLD WAR II COMPOSITE.  Photographs relating to training, various campaigns and
theaters of action for World War II donated to the Library by numerous private individuals.  The
donations vary in type from snapshots to official photographs.  1941-1945.  4568 items.

MOTION PICTURE FILM

The Eisenhower Library audiovisual collection has 613,000 feet of original motion picture film, as well as 365,000 feet of duplicate copies made from the originals for research use.The largest portion of the motion picture holdings covers the presidential years and was given to the President by the Columbia Broadcasting System. The Library also has a number of documentary films relating to World War II, including the film version of General Eisenhower's book, Crusade in Europe. A film viewer can be made available to researchers wishing to see motion picture film.

SOUND RECORDINGS

Another important segment of the audiovisual collection consists of 1000 hours of audio tapes and discs covering the period 1944 to the late 1960s. A series of discs made by the White House Army Signal Corps comprises the largest portion of the audio collection. These materials pertain primarily to President Eisenhower's roles in ceremonial occasions, national addresses, and press conferences.

COPYRIGHT AND RESTRICTIONS

Many of the audiovisual materials are subject to copyright or other restrictions. Researchers wishing to use the materials or to obtain information about these restrictions are asked to submit an application form stating the nature and purpose of the research to the Director of the Eisenhower Library.
