whom??, and died 24 August 1907 in Waterville, Kansas-bur.Riverside

Notes for Jefferson COX:
Marshall County News-20 September, 1879
Jefferson Cox-Born in Illinois in 1833 and moved to Kansas in Dec of
1855. Homesteaded 80 acres on Fawn Creek

DEATH OF JEFFERSON COX----Jeff Cox, one of the old settlers on Fawn
Creek,Committed suicide last Saturday.Mr. Cox's family have been fearful
for some time that he might take his own life and had been on the watch
to prevent him from doing so, if possible. On Saturday, he took a bottle
of Carbolic Acid, that had been left in the chicken house, where it had
been used in spraying for mites, and he drank the contents. His wife saw
something was wrong as soon as he came from the chicken house and she
assisted him into the house and onto the bed, where he died in a very
few moments, after entering the house.....Funeral services were held from
the house on Monday (Aug 26,1907). The bereaved family certainly have
the sympathy of all their friends, in this second affliction, which has
come upon them in so short a time.....(The first affliction being the
suicide of James R. COX, the eldest son of Jeff COX.)

Additional notice in paper---SUICIDE OF JEFFERSON COX......Saturday
morning, last, came word to town that Jefferson Cox, one of the oldest
residents of this township, had committed suicide at his home, about 3
miles southeast of Waterville,KS.
Some eleven years ago,we are informed, he had a serious illness and
every summer since then, he has become ,at times, despondent and would
worry and brood over imaginary troubles and the suicide of his son,
James, about 2 months ago,no doubt, is the immediate cause of his death
by his own hands, during a temporary abberation of the mind. No other
reason is known for his act as he was in comfortable circumstances.
Saturday morning, about 8:00 AM, he was apparently as usual, but going
out to the chicken house, where a bottle of carbolic acid was kept, he
took it and swallowed the contents. He walked to the house, where he
died immediately.
He was in the 72nd year of his age and leaves besides a wife, 6
daughters and 2 sons to mourn his loss. The sympathy of the community
goes out to his family in its sorrow.
The funeral was held on Monday afternoon at the home, conducted by Rev.
S.F. McGuire, after which the remains were buried at Riverside
Cemetery,Waterville, KS.

Karen Cox-found mention that Jefferson's parents were born or came from
Tennessee.

Marshall Co News-Sept 20, 1879-Jefferson Cox-Born in Illinois in 1833 ?
they moved to Kansas in 1855 and homesteaded 80 acres on Fawn Creek. 50
acres under cultivation, 30 corn 20 wheat, cattle & hogs.

Call from Karen Cox repeats story that the Indians were prevalent near
Jeff Cox's stone house and came to the house to ask for food. It was
given to them and they caused no trouble.

Elizabeth DOWNARD 10 November 1898 in Marshall County,Marysville,Kansas.

Notes for James R COX:
James R Cox-A prosperous Fawn Creek farmer committed suicide in
Waterville, Sat afternoon. He went into Bryan's Hardware store,
purchased a revolver, stating that he wanted it for his wife to keep
tramps away with, and while his wife was waiting for him in the front of
the store, he went out the back door and down the alley to Thorntn
Thomas's barn, where he shot himself in the head, killing himself
instantly. Mr. Cox was a respected citizen and the only reason that can
be assigned for his act, was that he became temporarily insane, because
there is no other reason known that he should take his own life. He had
been in poor health during the spring & summer but nothing wrong
mentally was noticed. He purchased a new harvester and had been trying
to make it work in his field, without too much success and it is
supposed that the worriement over the harvester, in the hot sun caused
his mind to become unbalanced. Blue Rapids Times-July 11, 1907
