Mamie Eisenhower Centennial

The centennial of Mamie Eisenhower's birth was commemorated with special programs at the Eisenhower Center in Abilene, KS, on November 15-16, 1996. The Center is operated by the National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, D.C.

The former first lady's three granddaughters will attend. At 8 p.m. on November 15, granddaughter Susan will lecture on her new biography of her grandmother, "Mrs. General Ike".

A new exhibit, "Mamie: A Centennial Celebration - 1896-1996"  opened on the morning of November 16 featuring many items never before on display.

First ladies author-historian, Carl Anthony will moderate a panel discussion featuring granddaughters Susan Eisenhower and Mary Eisenhower Atwater. Mary Jane McCaffree Monroe, personal social secretary to Mrs. Eisenhower and Rex Scouten, Curator of the White House will also appear on the panel.

Anne Eisenhower, along with several Eisenhower White House staff members were  in attendance. Events conclude with a luncheon based on a menu Mrs. Eisenhower served as first lady in November 1954 and a 1950s fashion show.
