The book "Genealogies of Kentucky Families" published in 1981 gives the following beginnings for the CHINN family:
The CHINNs are an ancient family in England and Scotland, where we find the name under the seal CHEYNE, bearing one of the oldest and most illustrious Coats of Arms in Great Britain. The orthography of the name has been changed many times from the Norman-French title, DeCheyne. We find it variously written in Nisbett's Heraldry and other works on this subject, viz: Le Chein, CHEYNE, Chynn, CHINN, the last being adopted as the spelling of the name in America. In London there is an avenue called for the family of ancient times, "Cheyne-Row."
The CHINNs in Kentucky are descendants, as far as their history has been traced, from John Chynn, the Colonist, and from his eldest son, Raleigh Chinn, Burgess for Lancaster County, Virginia, 1731. (see Hayden's Virginia Genealogies" and Bishop Meade's "History of Old Churches and Old Families of Virginia, and Register for May, 1905).
Raleigh Chinn married at Stratford-by-Bow, London, 1700, Esther Ball, daughter of Joseph Ball, by his first wife. She was half-sister of Mary Ball, the mother of Washington. In 1713 it is written, he settled in Lancaster County, Virginia, and was one of the largest land owners in Southeastern Virginia. Colonial William Chinn (Raleigh, Chichester, Richard) born in Albemarle County, Virginia, in 1768, came to Kentucky and married Sarah Bryan, a daughter of Captain William Bryan, of Bryan's Station, Fayette County, Kentucky.

December 10, 1830 Charles Frederick CHINN was born in Birmingham,
Warwickshire, England
1847 (age 17) he left home, because he supposedly could not get
along with his stepmother.
He went on two world cruises as a sailor. On one voyage he
sailed around the Cape of Good Hope to New Zealand.
Then he returned to England.
April 29, 1861 Charles Chinn (age 30) married Maria SHEARS (age
25) at St. Luke's Church in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.
George Davenport was the Curate who performed the ceremony. John
Chinn and U. A. Green were witnesses. Their residence at time of
marriage was on Bromsgrove Street.
They were involved in the Church of England (Anglican).
April-May 1869 after the Civil War, Charles Frederick and Maria
(SHEARS) CHINN came to America in a sailing vessel as steerage
passengers. It took six weeks to sail across the ocean from
London to New York.
July 1869 Charles and Maria (Shears) CHINN settled near Shannon,
Carroll County, Illinois and resided there for six or seven
years.
1876 Charles and Maria (Shears) CHINN and four children left
their home near Shannon, Carroll County, Illinois and boarded a
train for Kansas.
1876 They came by the Kansas (Union) Pacific Railroad from Kansas
City, MO to Junction City, Davis County, Kansas where they
transferred to the M. K. T. (Missouri, Kansas, and Texas) or
(Katy) Railroad then to Parkerville, Morris County, Kansas.
1876 At Parkerville they were met by friend, Samuel MIERS. Samuel
MIERS took the CHINN family to his home (NE1/4 Section 18 Twp 14S
R 8E) two miles east of where Dwight, Ohio Township, Kansas now
is. They lived with Samuel MIERS until they could purchase land,
build a small house and start farming.
1876 Charles CHINN had inherited $600.00 from England, so he
purchased a quarter section (SW1/4 Section 17 Twp 14S R 8E) of
land for $2.50 per acre from the Kansas (Union) Pacific Railroad,
a team of horses, and a few sheep with this money.
After 1876 the original house was located 2 miles east and 1/2
mile south of where Dwight, Ohio Township, Kansas now is.
Material for the house was hauled from Parkerville, Kansas, six
miles away. Using a cave in a cliff, he put up a shelter for the
horses and stock.
They later bought an additional 80 acres (S 80 of NW1/4 Section
17 Twp 14S R 8E) north of the original quarter section of land.
June 10, 1885 Charles CHINN died June 10, 1885 at Morris County,
Kansas. He was buried in SWARTZ Cemetery, Morris County, Kansas.
To support the family, Maria worked away from home whenever
she could as a midwife (practical nurse) and also did housework
for neighbors. The children did the farming and worked for
neighbors. But they managed and the children grew up.
1889 Frank CHINN took over the home place, and Maria continued to
live at home with them.
1901 Maria (Shears) CHINN made a trip to Oregon to visit
Frederick Charles and Annie Mary (SWARTZ) CHINN.
Maria (SHEARS) CHINN was blind the last four years of her life,
and had to be helped about the home.
The home burned and they lost nearly everything, so Maria lived
with her daughter, Amy AMSBURY, until a new house could be built.
January 22, 1921 Maria (Shears) CHINN (aged 84 years 10 months
and 22 days) died at the home of her son, Frank Edmund CHINN in
Morris County, KS.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Charles SWARTZ at Morris
Church. Maria (SHEARS) CHINN was buried in SWARTZ Cemetery,
Morris County, Kansas.

[The Presbyterian Church
The wrecking of the old Morris Church this winter truly marks the passing of an
old landmark of this community. It was built in 1885 before the town of Dwight, Kansas
was thought of. Frank Edmund CHINN, who for many years was actively associated
with the church organization, recalls that the building was dedicated July 12, 1885.]
