Script from the obit of John R. Harrold:
"Father of Dr. E.O. Harrold, Marion, Dr. John R. Harrold, often in Marion, died in his 87th year of a
protracted illness at his home in Roll, Ind., last Saturday. He had lived in the same family home for more
than 50 years, serving first as school teacher, then district physician after the Civil War. He was an active
republican, twice chosen as nominee for the office of Grant county treasurer.
With his parents and brothers he migrated north in a prairie schooner at the outbreak of the Civil War,
fleeing the south whose policy of secession and national disintegration he denied. Political opinions formed
thus early carried him into the ranks of the Republican party, which he saw formed under Abraham
Lincoln. Dr. Harrold enlisted in the Union party with his four brothers, serving in the 1138th Co. 14th
Indiana regiment.
At the funeral held Monday from the Roll Methodist Episcopal church, pallbearers were Jonas A. Palmer,
Ellis Banter, Isaac Harrold, Frank Kelley, Irvin Dick, and Bert Johnson. Burial was in Asbury Chapel
