SQUIER Family History
The Squiers were squires in the court of the king of
Scotland, hence the name.
One Squier fell in the Battle of Wellington (a bachelor).
He left his big farm near Edinburgh, Scotland to the seventh
generation, Ida (Squier) Fuller. Taxes and lawyers had eaten up
the estate.
The Squiers were descendants from English and Scottish and
Holland Dutch ancestors (lineage) that came to America (New York)
in colonial days (1722?).

John Squier was born on March 24, 1792 in Washington County, New
York.
John Squier married Polly W. LAMPMAN.
1822 John Squier resided at Fort Edward, Washington County, New York.
They removed in 1841 to Rochester, Monroe County, New York and
located on a farm.
In the fall of 1848 they came to Coldwater, Branch County,
Michigan. They migrated from New York while the children were
young--even before some were born.
Some years later they came to Noble County, Indiana.
In the winter of 1855? they came to Muskegon County, Michigan.
They settled in the white pine forests along the Muskegon
and White Rivers and built their homes from hand hewn lumber.
They knew the pioneer privations--what it was to meet savage
wolves and bears--what it meant to weave and knit and use the
crude implements to get along with. From the stories told of
their adventures, the Indians were very friendly and helped them
a great deal.
John SQUIER died after 1855.

James D. SQUIER
James D. Squier was born on April 13, 1828 at Fort Edward,
Washington County, New York.
**James D. Squier liked tools and worked as a blacksmith
when real young. When nearing his twenties one summer he had
been putting in a very, very hard day in his shop. Toward
evening he was very warm, so he went outside his shop, laid down
on a bench and went to sleep. This was the start of a rheumatic
fever which left one leg shorter than the other after an all
summers' illness. His health was never too good. The government
would not accept him for army service because of being a cripple.
Because of this affliction this seemed to make him very gentle,
devoted, and loving of his family. He wanted them to have the
very best competent teaching--helping them with their schoolwork.
He even taught Ida Squier how to knit. They bought a very modern
bellows organ and the children were taught music.**
