 Husband: Martin SCHWARZ
Born: ABT 1800 in: Wurttemberg, Germany
    Died: 1854 in: U.S.A.
  Father:
  Mother:
                  Hans Martin SCHWARZ

Hans Martin SCHWARZ was born about 1800 in Wurttemberg, Germany.

Martin SCHWARZ, Sr. married Anna Maria VOTLIN in Tubingen,
                  Germany about 1836.

Their name was later changed to SWARTZ.

1853--Martin and Anna Maria SWARTZ came to America from
Wurttemberg, Germany. They came in a sailing vessel that took
six weeks to make the trip across the ocean.

1854--Martin SWARTZ, Sr. died soon after arriving to America.

1854--They first settled in Cincinnati, Clermont County, Ohio.

**Family tradition states that Anna Maria (VOTLIN) SWARTZ
required all her children to speak German while in their private
home. That caused both Martin SWARTZ, Jr. (her son) and Annie
Mary (SWARTZ) CHINN (her granddaughter) to become resentful of
that and even want to deny their German connection. Martin
SWARTZ, Jr. evidently had broken speech the rest of his life and
caused resentment focused towards him during WWI.**

                  Martin SWARTZ

1 Oct 1837--Martin SCHWARZ was born at Wurttemberg, Germany.

1853--At the age of 16 Martin SWARTZ came to America from
Wurttemberg, Germany with his parents and five brothers and
                  sisters.

1854--They first settled in Cincinnati, Clermont County, Ohio.

Martin drove a beer truck to help support the family. Martin
enlisted in the United States Navy on the Union side in the Civil
War. Martin SWARTZ got a job on a farm in Ohio.

Apr 1865--Martin SWARTZ married Jane LILLICH in Clermont County,
Ohio. Annie Mary and John were born there.

1870--After the Civil War late in 1870 the family moved from
Clermont County, Ohio to Morris County, Kansas where they took up
a homestead near Dwight. George BECKLEHIMER accompanied them on
                  this trip.

1870/1871--They stayed in Topeka, Kansas that winter. Martin's
two brothers, John and George had gone ahead and taken up two dry
land homesteads. Martin SWARTZ took the adjoining homestead
which had a good spring of water.

1871--The SWARTZ brothers (John and George) left Topeka by the
Santa Fe [Railroad] to file claims in the spring of 1871. They
returned to Topeka by train, and the next day started back for
Morris County. They took claims in Section 18, Ohio Township,
southeast of what is now Dwight, Kansas.

They became a part of the Slough Creek Community, where they
established a church, school and cemetery, along with the Chinns,
                  Amsburys, Meyers and other families.

21 Nov 1896--The SWARTZ School ground was deeded to District 52
by Martin SWARTZ. Martin Swartz donated three acres of his
homestead at Dwight for a cemetery and school. The school house
was still standing in the 1960's. The cemetery is known as the
"Slough Creek or The Swartz Cemetery."

6 Jul 1898--Jane (LILLICH) SWARTZ died at Dwight, Kansas. She
                  was buried at Dwight, Kansas.

Martin stayed in his home for 20 years trying to get along with
renters, both relatives and others until he sold the homestead
                  and went west to live.

1911--For the first three years he lived with his sister,
Christine (SWARTZ) KERNS, and his niece, Emma KERNS, in Tacoma,
Washington. Then he moved to Oregon City, Oregon where he made
his home for 10 years with his daughter, Annie and Fred CHINN.

4 May 1924--Martin SWARTZ died Sunday at the home of Frederic
Charles and Annie Mary (SWARTZ) Chinn of Central Point, several
                  miles from Oregon City.

held at the R. L. Holman and Son mortuary Monday afternoon. The
Meade Post No. 2, G. A. R., of which organization Mr. SWARTZ was
a member, conducted the impressive ceremony accorded veterans of
the Civil War. Many friends attended and a number of close
friends went to the Southern Pacific depot later in the afternoon
to pay their last respect to the veteran, as his body was shipped
to his former home at Dwight, Kansas, where a second service will
be held and where the remains are to be interred beside those of
                  his wife.
