FIRST BANK:

   The first bank was started by M.D. Herington in 1883. It was built of native stone
and was located on a knoll at the soutwest corner of Broadway and Main. It was operated
a short time as a private bank, then was incorporated and given the name The Bank of
Herington.

FIRST CHURCH:

   The first church to locate in Herington was the Presbyterian. Construction started in
1884 at what is now 301 North Broadway. In 1886 the Methodist Espiscopal church was
erected at the corner of B and Walnut.

FIRST DRUG STORE:

   The first drug store was that of John Lowe, and was located immediately west of the
bank building.

FIRST FIRE:

   The first building destroyed by fire was the Risley residence which was located at 
what is now 306 North Broadway. The fire occurred during the early part of January 1887.

FIRST GRAIN AND FEED STORE:

   A frame building at what is now 107 East Main was built by Link and Frank Huffman as
a combination business and residence. A grain and feed store in the early days, it then
became a residence and was finally torn down.

FIRST HOTEL:

   The City Hotel was erected in 1885 on the west side of North Broadway, about the
middle of the first block north of Main Street. The hotel was operated by "Batty Eye"
Quirk. The building ws later moved to 108 North Third.

FIRST HOUSE:

   Other than the Herington House, the first home built in town was constructed by Samuel
M. McQuiston in 1885 for his own residence. It was a small frame building and was located
at the south-east corner of the intersection of A and Wilde. It was demolished about 15
years ago.

FIRST LAW OFFICE:

   The law office of Stewart and Ludlow was erected in the early part of 1885, and
located at the northeast corner of Main and Broadway.

FIRST LIVERY BARN:

   In 1885 the first livery barn was located at what is now 115 West Main, operated by
W.D. Hart. Visitors could stable their horses there, and town folk could hire a horse
and buggy.

FIRST RAILROAD:

   By 1884 the Topeka, Salina and Western Railway began building their tracks west out of
Council Grove, intending to go south to Diamond Springs. They only got a few miles west
of Wisley when they ran out of funds - a serious affair. The contractors could not pay
the men and they quit.
   The tracks were then taken over by the Missouri Pacific Railway. In 1885 they 
straightened their survey line after M.D. Herington offered them right of way through his
extensive ranch, 80 lots in town and $1,000 to build the depot. Begun in the fall of 1885
the depot was located on the northeast side of the 100 block of North B. It was torn
down in 1977.

FIRST STORE:

   The first store in Herington was established in 1885, and handled general merchandise.
It was operated by Risley and Lincoln, and was located at what is now 109 North Broadway.
This store was also used as a post office in 1886. Mr Risley was the first postmaster.
