The history of Herington goes back a long way - even before the time Monroe Davis Herington first came to the area in 1880. The first inhabitants were the Indian tribes of the Caddoan linguistic family and later those of the Siouan linguistic family. The first white people in the area were the members of the 1541 Coronado expedition.
A group of German immigrants were the first permanent white settlers who settled on Lyon Creek in 1859. Many other homesteaders followed and by the time of Mr. Herington's arrival on the scene, many hard- working and steadfast pioneer families had begun to civilize the prairie. With the platting of the townsite, the coming o the railroad and the incorporation of the city of Herington, streams of people came to make their home in the new town. It was a time of excitement, adventure and growth.
