Foreward

In trying to draw attention to Argentine's centennial, it has been our attempt to spark local interest by having people reflect back on their own family heritage and to record permanently the information in this Limited Edition volume.

It is disappointing to know now that there will be many people who have been unintentionally overlooked. We have sought to be as accurate as humanly possible.

It is hoped that each reader will find something of interest and value.

I wish to thank Kes Kesler, history consultant, for suggesting the idea of a book on the 100th anniversary of Argentine. His assistance, patience and understanding are greatly appreciated.

Thanks, too, to the board of directors of Cross-Lines Retirement Center, and in particular, Malvin Wax, who arranged for us to use the conference room in compiling the family histories.

I want to thank those persons who wrote stories about their families for their interest in this project. Without this the book would not have been possible.

There are four individuals who deserve special thanks: Bessie Bradley, Sarah Brunk, Mildred McDaniel and Marie Wax. These volunteers met every Monday afternoon for seven months to work on the project at Cross-Lines.

I want to acknowledge and thank Tim and Walter Lietzen of the Silver City Record for publicizing the book and reproducing old photographs.

A note of thanks goes to Mabel Shutt and Helen Ghrist Barrington for typing numerous family stories.

In particular, I especially wish to thank Edwin Dale Shutt, II, to whom I am deeply indebted for his assistance. From the beginning the project has been sort of a joint venture. Without his historical contribution in writing and editing the early Argentine general history and the countless hours of interviewing over a hundred people for biographical information and his own collection of picture, this book would not have been possible.

I do not want to overlook the multitude of persons who donated their photographs of early Argentine to the Simmons Funeral Home historic gallery and who helped identify many pictures. Photos from this collection are included in this book.

Finally, I wish to express my appreciation to my father and mother, Howard and Anna, for allowing the funeral home to underwrite the book financially as a non-profit community project.
