"You probably know that the Kanza Indians were known as the People of the Southwind. I would suggest using Southwind as a part of the name for a Web page. The southwind never ceases except for a day after a frontal passage. It is very much a part of our lives, especially for those of us that are in the prairie." - Suggested by James Good

-from Col. George Griffith's speech at an annual Old Settlers Reunion at Tonganoxie, KS, August 15, 1926:

"In that vast area south of the Great Lakes and east of the Mississippi, were numerous large families, or units, of an Indian Nation. This nation was known as the Algonquin, the head and central body of all the now called tribes of that area.

The Delawares were a tribe of American Indians belonging to the Algonquin family living when first known to white men, on the Delaware river. They called themselves Lenne Lenape (meaning in their language "real men.") They occupied eastern Pennsylvania and most of New Jersey.... Later, driven from their original home by the progress of the Whites, they moved north and westward.... The Delawares were driven north and west and we find them necessarily encroaching on other tribes near the Great Lakes, which matter caused strife.... They were used as a frontier buffer of the whites, but served them in such a manner as to deserve more protection and recognition than they ever received. They were made to encroach on other tribes by reason of losing their own lands and this brought on wars with other tribes, so it was war within and war without.

They were the bodyguard of Fremont on his voyage of discovery through the wilderness and unknown west. With him they were the first to reach the Pacific. He trusted them as the "Real Men." They were to the Pacific Coast before Lewis and Clark."
