Eldred District 81
The last Eldred schoolhouse was built in 1920 and still stands as a
sentinel, for what it was in the past.
You walk in and sit down, your mind travels back to yesterday; you
think you hear the echo of the teacher's and children's voices down
through the years, or the B-Square 4-H Club members practicing a square
dance to the music of "The Rose of San Antonio". You see the table
filled with food and the community assembling for a Thanksgiving Dinner;
or a card game between the community center members.
The site for the schoolhouse was obtained for $25. District 81 was
formed September 10, 1887, at a meeting in the home of Isaac Vandorin
and under the chairmanship of Jr. Snyder. The first school-board included
Vandorin, Clerk; Scott Briley, director; and C.W. Slack, treasurer.
On September 24, bons were voted in the amount of $700 for the finest
type of frame structure available in '87. The first Eldred Schoolhouse
was built.
Education took second place to work on the farm in the early days of
Eldred. School was held for three months term, December to March 2. The
term of 1887-1888, Mrs. C.W. Slack taught 12 weeks for $22 per month and
Mrs. Ada Laurence 10 weeks for $25 a month. There was 65 teachers taught
at Eldred from 1887 to the term 1958-59 which was the last year of school.
So many people left for the Cherokee Strip Run in 1893, that there was
not enough pupils to have school; so Eldred pupils went to Amber School
from 1897 to 1900 with U.G. Rogers as teacher.
We note as the teachers get more education their salaries increased;
and the farm became more mechanized, the pupils started to school at an
earlier age. Also during the years of 1896-97 the McGuffy's First and
Fifth Readers and Spellers were used.
One teacher that taught in 1913-14, Alice B. Martin MacGregor (the
late Riley MacGregor's wife) is still living in Medicine Lodge.
Records show Lulu Springer Hall taught for nine years at Eldred; two
years records were missing. Mrs. Edith Haynes taught ten years.
The B-Square 4-H Club started meeting in the schoolhouse in 1948. I
was asked to be community leader. Don Poland was the other leader. Later
Harold Blackwell took Don's place. Then Albert Heublein was leader until
I quit in 1960. That year Albert and Fern took over the leadership and
continued for four years.
The families whose children were members were the Otto Thorn family,
Paul Eckell, Hillmon Cargill, Albert Heublein, Harold Blackwell, Vic
Younger, Herb Wehling, Harold Hamilton, Martin Knoop, Ray Hoyt, Dale
Laverentz, Agnes Lawrence, Bob Mease, J.R. Chain, Wilman Kimball Bell,
and Kenneth Keimig. Mrs. James Bell has been leader in the later years.
All the 4-H families worked very hard in those years, trying to excel
in each event. Most 4-H families also belonged to the Eldred Community
Center along with the Hugo Thom family, Guy Aubley, Ivol Howard, Oral
Hensley, Ray Banks, and Mike Stephenson. Everyone helped with the Thanks-
giving Dinner, Halloween, and Christmas parties. We met once a month to
play pitch or just visit with your good neighbor.
This is why Eldred Schoolhouse has so many memories.
