School Memories

Teaching Hawkins District 33 was a full time job at $75 per month, with
room and board at Will Stranathan's home for $25. Eleven boys, four girls -
all eight grades included - made a busy schedule. Teachers' duties included
janitor work, lunch, and playground supervision. I am sure that every
teacher at some time shared her lunch with a child who forgot to bring his.
School programs, especially at Christmas, were enjoyed by the children,
  patrons, and the teacher.
Programs combined with a box supper gave extra money for special needs,
  such as playground equipment.
The favorite outdoor game was baseball; occasionaly blackman and last
couple out were played. Fox and geese was a favorite after a nice snow.
Indoor games were ciphering, and drawing freehand with colored chalk at
the blackboard. Several chapters read from a favorite book passed the noon
  period on a bad day.
A bucket of water drawn from a cistern, a wash pan, a bar of soap, and
towels met the school cleanliness needs. Janitor chores, sweeping, and
dusting were daily, and so was carrying several loads of coal, which
sometimes was located in the basement or in the shed-barn.
Making garments for the family from colorful printed chicken feed sacks
gave extra clothing at small cost. Mothers would exchange sack patterns
for variety and for numbers of the same pattern for larger garments.
