Pleasant Valley School Dist. 27
This school began in 1879 with 14 and 3/7th sections in the district.
Present records go back to 1907-1908 when Maud E. Jackson was teacher.
One of her first grade pupils was W.E. Riggins now of Medicine Lodge.
The original school district was located in the old Maddox pasture
about 2 miles south of Elm Mills Summer Resort. There was never a
building erected at this site, but an acre of land is still owned by
the district.
Authorities at one time considered combining the Elm Mills district
with Pleasant Valley, however a school was established at the site of
District 19, a mile west of Elm Mills and Pleasant Valley was built
12 miles north of Medicine Lodge on highway 181.
The first term of school was in 1883 and the school board was: Clerk-
Philip butcher, Director - Ed Williams, Treasurer - James Crouch.
Addresses of first board members were Elm Mills and Amber. In 1893-94
Sawyer addresses first appeared on the members address.
On the school census for 1883 persons ages 5-21 years old were - males
28, females 16. Number attending school during year were 28. Twenty-two
male and six female. Some of the first students in 1883 were Mary Chadwick,
age 20 years, and John Lunsford age 10 years.
During the year of 1934-35 teh school had a record of no pupils tardy
or absent for the whole year. Fifteen children attended that year and
Darlene Manson Rickard was the teacher.
The following pupils were the 1939-40 enrollment: Vera, Lucky, Corlena
and Pearl Lilliqvist, Johnnie Grimes, Carolyn Kumburg, Boyd Strickland,
Max and Earl Rynerson, and Helen Young. The teacher, Julia Buck.
Mrs. Lloyd Clarke came to our shcool once a week to teach music. During
WWII the students planted a cedar tree for each boy from our community that
was in the service, many of these trees are still standing in the old
school yard.
Pleasant Valley school closed in the year of 1945-46 having held school
for 67 years. The teacher who taught that year was Helen Wright. There
were four students, they were as follows: Carolyn and Merlin Kumberg, Vera
Lilliqvist, and Shirley Rose. Each of the last four students have the honor
of being able to say that one of their parents attended Pleasant Valley
school at one time.
The old school building was sold to the Isabel Gun Club and was moved a
couple of miles south of Isabel where it is still used by the Club.
