Mike Stephenson
Mike and Iona were married at Mangum, Oklahoma, September 10, 1930. They
lived on one of Mike's fathers farms near Watonga, Oklahoma. They milked cows,
raised chickens, turkeys, alfalfa, corn and cotton.
The grassland of Barber County looked more interesting, so they moved on
her father's ranch 9 miles northeast of Medicine Lodge. There they raised
Hereford cattle and supplemented their income with milking cows, raising hogs
and turkeys. Mike and George Fleishman, the hired man, came to Kansas from
Watonga in March of 1935. Iona was teaching school, so stayed with neighbors
to complete her school term.
One year Iona's sister, Aline, quit teaching school and came to Kansas
and Iona and Aline raised around 800 turkeys, contracting them to Purina Feed
Company in Wichita. They turned them out each morning, when they were large
enough to roam over the prairie to hunt grasshoppers and eat cactus blooms.
It was a great adventure following them each morning.
In 1948 the Hybsha ranch came up for sale. Mike and Iona bought it, and
in the winter of 1949-50 they built a new house, moving into it in the spring
of 1950.
Mike and Iona have only one daughter, Camille (Colle), who came to live
with them in August of 1943. She is married to Dennis Colle, Nickerson, Kansas.
They have two daughters, Yvonne Denise and Kristina Dee.
Camille and her husband moved from Hutchinson in 1966 to be involved in
the present farming and ranching business started by her parents.
Mike passed away on July 29, 1974, leaving Iona with 43 years of very
happy memories.
