Henry Abt
Henry Abt came to this country and county in 1910 from Bunzen,
Switzerland - residing first ona farm a few miles west of Medicine
Lodge which was later owned by Alonzo "Shorty" Watson. He attended
a rural school for three weeks learning the fundamentals of the
English language which he never completely mastered - always main-
taining his German accent.
He later purchased land a few miles futher west and slightly
north of the Medicine River. In early 1914 he returned to Switzer-
land to visit his parents and to meet a girl. Margaret, who became
his bride after a six week acquaintance. We have often laughed when
told that our mother's English vocabulary first consisted of Hi-Lo-
Jack-Joker-Game, as Dad taught her English and at the same time
gained a card partner. In 1919 before Roman's birth they returned
to Switzerland to visit their families.
While living inSwitzerland, our parents were both of the Catholic
faith and continued to drive to Sharon every Sunday possible to attend
mass with their three children, Henry Jr., Margaret and Roman. They
later became acquainted with the Methodist minister and became members
of the Methodist Church in Medicine Lodge.
In 1920 our parents purchased the remainer of their farm and home
from Charles Apple where they resided until our father passed away in
1942. Mother remained on the farm a short time, then moved to Medicine
Lodge where she later purchased her home. In 1939 she returned to
Switzerland to visit and again in 1947 when I accompanied her.
In 1964 mother sold her home and moved to Wellington to be near
me and my family and remained there until she passed away in 1967.
Our father was always very interested in the community - was on
the school board for many years, worked in the Farm Bureau Office, and
was always communicating with the state and national senators and
representatives on farm issues. I can remember many farmers coming by
seeking his advice and assistance - especially at tax time to help with
filing their tax forms.
Although no one in our immediate family now resides in Medicine
Lodge, there is a granddaughter, Helen Abt Axline, who lives there with
her faimly. We, however, enjoy coming back for visits with friends and
thoroughly enjoy the Peace Treaty celebrations.
