Alfred Adams

Edwin and Maud Adams' three sons were born at the family home in Medicine Lodge where I still
reside. Wendell (Beefy) was born in 1909, Gwynne in 1912, and I, Alfred, in 1916. We are all members
of the Methodist Church, and all graduated from the Medicine Lodge High School.
When Wendell was in the sixth grade he started driving the "Town Herd". Later, as Gwynne and I
were old enough, we helped. Driving the town herd consisted of riding horseback over town in the
morning gathering up milk cows rom back lots, and taking them to pasture, and returning them in the
evening. This posed a few problems; there were sometimes forty cows, and some always took advantage
of grazing on unfenced flowers, etc. when stopped to shut others in their lots.
Wendell and Gwynne both worked several years at the Gyp Mill where Dad had worked in the early
days, but it had become National Gypsum.
Wendell, of Medicine Lodge, farmed and raised livestock, buying a farm the same year he married
Aetna DeWitt. She was a native of Sharon and a nurse, who served as school nurse in Barber County for
twenty-five years. They have two daughters, Mary Jane Herman and Patricia Graves. Mary Jane lives in
Plainview, Kansas, and has three daughters, Susan, Jana, and Carolyn; and three step-children, Shauna,
Christie, and Vernon. Her husband Joe, is a fisherman for Acme Tool Company, having been in oil field
work all his life. Susan is the only grandchild born in Barber County and is a fifth generation member
of the United Methodist Church in Medicine Lodge.
Patricia lives in Phoenix, Arizona. She is a dental assistant and has a daughter, Wendy. Her
husband, Jim, is employed by Dillon Compinies Inc., as produce supervisor for Frys Stores in Phoenix
     and Tucson.
Wendell has been semi-retired for several years, but still manages the Paul Adams farm which he
and Alfred own. Horse-back riding is his recreation.
Gwynne of Hardtner farmed and raised livestock. He married Beulah Baier, a native of Barber County.
They have three sons, Ed, Jim, and John, all of whom are college graduates. Ed, of Alva, Oklahoma, is
in the livestock business and works in a sale pavilion. He has a son, Ricky, and three step-children.
His wife Rita, teaches kindergarten and elementary grades at Sharon. Jim, of Colby, is a 4-H extension
Specialist. His wife, Mary Jane, is a music major. John is a school principal at Morrison, Oklahoma. His
wife, Charlene, workes in the bank. They ahve two children, Tina and Brandon. Before Gwynne retired, both
he and Beulah drove school buses for several years.
I, Alfred, spent most of my adult life as Ted Chapin's "right-hand" man on the Chapin ranch, except
for six months during WWII, when I was employed by Douglas Aircraft in California. I married Grace
Knight, a nurse from Beaumont, Texas. Since my retirement this winter, we plan to divide our time between
our home in Beaumont and the family home in Medicine Lodge.
*Note: Wendell died on May 27, 1979.
