Jack Anderson
Jack Anderson's family roots run deep in the Kiowa, Kansas area. His great-grand-
father, Jacob Chenoweth, came from Illinois in 1885 with his wife and children and
bought a farm near old Kiowa. Their daughter, Hettie J. married Alfred Anderson in
1892. They lived on a farm one and half miles east of Kiowa until the Cherokee Strip
was opened. She drove a team to a buckboard wagon while her young husband raced ahead
to stake a claim during the run. They homesteaded a farm 4 miles south of Kiowa, which
is still in the family name. They lived there until 1915, when they moved to Kiowa.
Hettie Anderson was very active in Eastern Star and the Congregational Church and
other club and civic activities. Her flowers were a constant joy to her.
Alfred and Hettie had one son, Frank L., who married Elizabeth Ricks, and they
continued to live on and to operate the family farm south of Kiowa. Elizabeth was
active in Eastern Star. Congregational Church, clubs, and many years was a dedicated
secretary of the Riverview Cemetery, giving many hours of her time to that work. She
often told of her mother, Mrs. Ed. Ricks (who was a charter member of the Cemetery
Association) and many other women who walked out to the cemetery from Kiowa, wearing
their sun bonnets, to work there to keep it beautiful. So Elizabeth was pleased to
continue that work.
The Frank Andersons had two sons: Jack M. and Clifford. Clifford died, as a young
man just graduated from college, of cancer. Jack married Helen Martin of Tulsa,
Oklahoma. They lived inIllinois for five years. Then moved back to the family farm
and later rented more land from Chris Olson and moved to that farm about 3 miles
northwest of Kiowa. They are members of the Congregational Church and enjoy doing
church work, having served in many offices. They are active in clubs and civic work.
Jack served on the township board as trustee for several terms. Both are very
interested in the school sports and supported the teams thru the years.
Their two children, Alfred W. and Margaret Sue, grew up on these farms and
graduated from the Kiowa schools. Alfred taught school for several years. Then
changed jobs and went into sales work for a Kansas City firm and lives in Tucson,
Arizona. He has two sons: Martin Thane and Chad B. Anderson.
Margaret married Leon Spriggs, and they live in Kiowa. Leon is engaged in farming
and Margaret is Assistant Cashier at the Bank of Kiowa. They have two children: Kirk
Don and Carrie Lynn who attend school in Kiowa.
So there have been six generations of Jack Anderson's family who have lived in the
Kiowa area. They love the land and are Kiowa boosters!
