Rev. Leslie E. Andrews
Leslie Earl Andrews, son of Milton and lydia (Newberry) Andrews, was born January
2, 1924 at Sedalia, Missouri. He was the second child in a family of four boys and
four girls. His father was a Free Methodist minister, so the family moved from time
to time. Leslie's elementary and secondary education included schools at St. Joseph,
Hannibal, and Chillicothe, Missouri. It was at Chillicothe that he met his wife-to-be.
Theresa Lucille Mendenhall, daughter of Theodore and Edna (Dowell) Mendenhall,
was born Decmeber 25, 1924 at Chillicothe, Missouri. Lucille was the oldest in a
family of two girls. Her father was employed by the Railway Express Agency at Chilli-
cothe, and she lived there all her life prior to marriage.
Leslie and Lucille were both in the 1942 graduating class of the Chillicothe High
School. Leslie entered Central College at McPherson, Kansas, that fall, and Lucille
continued her job at the Citizen's National Bank in Chillicothe.
They were united in marriage on June 24, 1943, at McPherson, and Lucille enrolled
in Central College that fall. Their children include Marjorie Lois (Mrs. James D.
Orr) of Tyler, Texas; Michael Paul of Longview, Texas; David Leslie, killed in a car
wreck, March 19, 1964; and Joseph Earl of Wichita, Kansas. They are the proud grand-
parents of six boys and two girls.
Leslie's preparation for the ministry included a year at McPherson College after
graduating from Central. He then entered Greenville College, Greenville, Illinois,
for his senior year and recieved his A.B. degree in 1946. The eight years between
college and seminary found Leslie teaching in high school and grade school, doing
photography and watch reparing, taking a summer of post graduate work at Fort Hays
Kansas State College, and serving as a "supply" pastor. For Lucille it was the busy
life of a housewife and the mother of four growing children.
Leslie entered the Iliff School of Theology at Denver, Colorado, in 1954 and
received his Th.M. (Master of Theology) degree in 1957. He then served as a Chaplain
intern in the Clinical Pastoral Education program at Colorado Phychopathic Hospital
during the summer of 1957. He also completed a 20-week program of Clinical Pastoral
Education at the Hadley Regional Medical Center in Hays, Kansas in 1973.
Rev. Andrews' ministry in The Methodist Church began as an "Approved Supply Pastor"
at Lenora, Kansas in 1949. He joined the Central Kansas Conference "on trial" in 1952,
was ordained Deacon in 1955, was received into the Conference in "full connection"
in 1956, and was ordained Elder in 1957. He is now a member of the Kansas West Conference
of The United Methodist Church. Other Pastorates include McCraken, 1952-54; Kanorado,
1954-58; WaKeeney, 1958-68; Wichita (Mt. Vernon Church), 1968-1972; and LaCrosse,
1972-78.
Rev. and Mrs Andrews moved to Medicine Lodge on May 31, 1978, and his ministry
here officially began on June 1, 1978. They have found the people of Barber County
most likable and friendly and the beauty of the countryside unequaled in Kansas.
They were particularly impressed by the magnitude and quality of the 1979 Peace
Treaty Pageant and all the related activities in church and community.
