Elmer Angell, Jr.

Elmer Angell, Jr. was born in 1920 in the house presently occupied by his
family, 20 miles southwest of Medicine Lodge to Elmer and Erma Angell. He
acquirred his primary education by attending grade school at Lockert School,
graduating in 1932 in the midst of the drought and depression years of the
30's, the "Dust Bowl Days." Mother and we children moved to the farm that Dad
bought at the southwest edge of Medicine Lodge, where we lived and went to
school, while Dad commuted from farm to ranch. We were able to raise some cow
feed on the river bottom ground, where the roots could penetrate deep enough
to find some moisture. When Wenonah and Lucille finished high school, mother
went back to the ranch to live, and I continued my residence until graduation.
Times were hard, so I cut firewood and sold it by the cord, also milked a cow
and ran a trap line to help finance my schooling. While in High School, I was
in the Vocational Agriculture class taught by V.E. McAdams, until he resigned
to be the first County Agent of Barber County. In my second year of Agriculture,
under Charles Mantz, I was a member of the crops judging team and won 1st high
individual at Coldwater. As result of this, I became interested in growing
certified seed and started out by raising some certified Atlas Sorgo, later
certified wheat and other varities of sorghum, and won the "Premier Seed Growers
Award" in 1966. Now growing and selling certified seed is an important part of
  our farming operation.
While I was in High School, I went to V.E. McAdams, our new County Agent,
to ask if we could start a 4-H club, and he consented. So we got the word around
and held the first meeting of the Lone Eagle 4-H Club in our living room in
1935. I am proud to live in the community that kept this 4-H Club continuously
active until the present time, 43 years later.
We bought a farm in Allen County near Iola in 1946, near mother's birthplace.
We went there to live, leaving the ranch to Bill and Joanne Cline, my sister and
her husband; we returned to Medicine Lodge and the ranch in 1951.
Lorena's maiden name was Lorena Ricke. She was born and raised about 3 miles
west of Sharon; and she graduated from Sharon High School in 1947. After her
mother's death in 1949, she went to Emporia and worked at Hallmark Card Company
a few years. She returned to Medicine Lodge where I first met her, and we were
married in 1954. We raised 4 children, Randall, Harold, Roger and Jan.
In 1975 we were asked to have the Barber County District 4-H and FFA livestock
judging contest at our ranch and accepted. Our neighbors and members of the Lone
Eagle 4-H Club helped us get started with it, and now it is an annual event.
