Leonard Baier
Leonard John Baier was born November 10, 1893, at his parents's home in Eagle
Township. Leonard was the only living son of Conrad and Barbara Roth Baier, German
immigrants. His name was an Americanization of both his father's name - Johann
Konrad - and his grandfather's name - Johann Leonhard. Johann Leonhard was a
shoemaker.
Mary Elizabeth Lukens was born May 16, 1894, Nashville, Kansas, the fourth
daughter of thirteen children born to Marion and Anna Lukens.
Leonard and Elizabeth were married August 18, 1918, Alva, Oklahoma. They
lived for twenty-four years on his father's ranch, and moved to 202 South Spring
Street in 1942.
In addition to ranching, Leonard served as trustee of Eagle Township for many
years and was a personal tax assessor for Medicine Lodge Township, after moving
into Medicine Lodge. In those days personal tax assessments were made in the
home during a special visit from the assessor. The assessment form was quite
lengthy, with spaces for listing such items as watches, rings, washing machines,
books of value, etc.
Leonard and Elizabeth had no children. The Baier Ranch, to which he held life
estate, was operated from many years after his retirment, and death, by a nephew
John Magnison. It is now owned and operated by Sam C. Baier, son of George Baier
and great-nephew to Conrad Baier.
Leonard died December 19, 1958, at his home in Medicine Lodge. Elizabeth died
January 12, 1966, Kenewick, Washington. Both are buried in Highland Cemetery,
Medicine Lodge.
