Sam Baier
Samuel Conrad Baier was born November 1, 1931, on the ranch seventeen miles
southwest of Medicine Lodge. He was the only son of George and Ella Crick Baier
and has three older sisters: Donna Garten, Marjorie Lukens, Beulah Adams.
Sam attended grade school at Elwood District 20 and high school at Medicine
Lodge. A member of Future Farmers of America, Sam made State Farmer in 1949
and American Farmer in 1950. Calvin Doile was his instructor and helped a lot
towards his records and cattle projects. Belonging to 4-H was also a help with
live-stock projects.
In 1950 Sam bought a cutting horse (Bucky) and won many trophies and ribbons
with him. After Sam joined the U.S. Marines in 1951, his brother-in-law Dale
Lukens rode Bucky for him. After two years in the service, Sam returned home to
farm.
On May 9, 1955, Sam and I were married. I (Bonnie) was born August 1, 1935,
at Cleo Springs, Oklahoma, daughter of Ray and Ada Pullian of Aline, Oklahoma.
I attended grade and high school at Aline and was very active in sports - singles,
girls doubles, and mixed doubles tennis and girls basketball all through high
school. The girls were county champions twice and District Champions.
After high school, I attended cosmotology school. After graduation and taking
State Board tests, I worked in Enid and Alva, Oklahoma. I also worked in Medicine
Lodge for Stela Richardson Beauty Shop which was in the back of Carper's Drug
Store (now Probst Pharmacy).
Sam and I farmed with his parents after our marriage. Our children are
Jeffrey Duane, born September 29, 1955; Troy Leigh, July 18, 1956; Tavy Jeanne,
July 19, 1957; and Kristy Renee, May 8, 1963. Jeff, Troy, and Tavy were born at
Achenbach Memorial Hospital, Hardtner; Kristy was born at Kiowa District Hospital,
Kiowa.
Sam lost his left arm in a machinery accident in March, 1962, pulling feed
from a hay baler. We have continued farming, working together, and as a family.
Tavy and Fred Freeman were married March 19, 1977. They have a son, Todd
Laramie, and live in Pratt, Kansas. Tatum LaRae Freeman was born December 18,
1979, Medicine Lodge, KS. Troy and Colette Graves were married April 12, 1978;
they live in Hardtner. Jeff and Rose Burenheide (Gates) were married February
10, 1979. They have a son, Clinton Dean; live on a ranch twenty miles southwest
of Medicine Lodge, and farm with us.
Kristy is a junior at Medicine Lodge High School. The three older children
are MLHS graduates. All the children have been active in Lone Eagle 4-H, other
community activities and in their school and church.
Sam and I are also involved in our community activities and in our family's
church, the Union Chapel.
