Charles Ballard
Charles Ballard, son of W.S. and Mary Catherine (Billig) Ballard was born,
Sept. 26, 1902, on a farm one mile south and three miles west of Hazelton,
Kansas. His mother was a school teacher before she established her home and
family. His father was a farmer and homesteaded a quarter section of land in
1884, which was the birth place of three sons. The brothers were Ellis and
Marion.
Charles attended his first three years of school at Fairview, a country
grade school, located two miles south and two miles west of Hazelton. Later,
when his parents moved, he went to Hazelton school, where he graduated from
high school in 1920. He worked part time during his high school years at the
Hazelton Depot for C.B. Onstott, Santa Fe agent, handling freight. Charles
was engaged in farming at an early age on the land, part of which was the
original homestead, southwest of Hazelton.
He married Holmes Mills, daugther of Mr. and Mrs. B. Mills, July 25, 1934,
and to this family two daughters were born; Mary Ella and Charlotte Homes.
Mary married Duane Reiling, and Charlotte to John Kern. These two families
include Steven, Terry Richard, and Shawn Reiling and Kelly and Charles Kern.
After Duane's death, Mary married Gordon Foster. Mary is a histology technician,
andCharlotte and John are school teachers.
Charles was active in the Methodist church at Hazelton and in community
life. He served on the Hazelton School board from 1948 to 1962.
