Charles Edward Barnard
In November, 1905, W.C. Barnard and his wife Evaline, their son Charlie, and
his wife Lucy, and their two little girls Evaline and Alma left their home near
Okarche, Oklahoma, and came to Barber County to their new home one and one-half
miles east of the Walstead school house, which is about half-way between Medicine
Lodge and Sharon. This is where they lived until the fall of 1919 when they moved
into Medicine Lodge. All the children except Geneva and Bill attended the Walstead
school and all attended the Medicine Lodge schools. In 1922 the family moved to a
farm two and one half miles east of town; and here they lived until 1948, when
they again moved into Medicine Lodge.
On the farm crops of wheat, alfalfa, and kafir were raised; and they always had
a big garden every summer. There was a good-sized peach orchard there, and in the
pasture there were lots of sand plum bushes; so much plum jelly and butter were
made. One of the things we children did on evenings after school in the fall was
to gather black walnuts and hull them; also pick the peanuts from the vines which
our Dad had gathered and put in a granary to dry. We also shelled pop corn we
raised. We helped gather the pumpkins and sweet potatoes and stored them in the
cellar for winter use.
We walked to school, never thinking of being taken, regardless of the weather.
Julia, Charles, and Geneva were born whild we lived in the country. Bill came
after we moved to town. From the time I started to school in the fall of 1909 to
the present time, 1979, there has been at least one of the Barnard children in
the Barber County schools as a pupil, teacher, or librarian.
The children are Evaline (Mrs. Rober) Clawson of Medicine Lodge, Alma (Mrs.
Lon) Hoagland and Julia (Mrs. Robert) Knowles both of Pratt, Charles of Yelm,
Washington, Geneva (Mrs. O.M.) Wheat of Medicine Lodge, and Bill of Ness City,
Kansas.
