Alfred Bartholomew
Allie (Alfreta) Kelly, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Davis Kelly, was
married to Wylie Wells, son of Charles and louisa Oliver Wells of Aline, OK,
April 15, 1907.
The Samuel Kelly family came from South Carolina in 1865 and settled at
Turon, KS, then later locating near Cherokee, OK. The Charles Wells family
lived near Sexton, Barber County, until the opening of the Cherokee Strip in
1893, after which they settled near Aline, OK. Allie and Wylie farmed on Sand
Creek in Eagle and Aetna township. Wylie died of T.B. January 12, 1911.
On December 2, 1912, Allie married Alfred C. Bartholomew, who, with his
twin brother, Albert, operated a store and post office at Lasswell, KS. Alfred
carried mail by spring wagon to neighboring farms. It was a treat for Edith
and Ethel, Allie's little daughters, to meet the mail carrier and ride back
to deposit the mail in the box. They attended Lasswell Sunday school. It was
fun to take buckets and tubs and go "plumin" in the spring-wagon. Also we
didn't have to harness "Old Pet" to our buggy every time we left home, as we
now had a new Maxwell car to drive.
On November 29, 1913, their son Albert (Bert) was born. Because there was
no school near, they relocated in Hardtner. Here Alfred built and operated an
ice plant, which did quite well, as this was before the advent of refrigerators.
On June 15, 1916, Charles was born. Then, ten years later, on November 17,
1926, Francis was born to complete the family. Edith and Ethel graduated at
Hardtner High School. Activities of the Methodist and Evangelical churches
helped out "growing up."
In 1928 the family moved on the Fred Friend farm southwest of Isabel.
Alfred obtained the Star Route position from the Medicine Lodge post office.
Edith married Bruce Hiskett, the son of Harry E. and Josephine B. Hiskett.
Edith and Bruce moved to the Hiskett farm northeast of Isabel and are now semi-
retired. They had four children, Mary Josephine (deceased) Marlene, Doris, and
Harry.
Ethel married Arthur Moore of Wichita. They have a daughter, Pamilla.
Albert and wife, Lois, reside in Medicine Lodge. They have two children,
John and Sherry.
Charles and wife, Audry, live in Austin, Texas. Their children, Charles
Forest and Sammy, live in Austin.
Francis is married to Joan Ehler and lives in Ponca City, OK. They have
three children, Donna, Carol, and Judy.
All the five children are living to date - February 15, 1979. The retiring
years of Allie and Alfred were spent at their home in Isabel. Allie died May
3, 1958 at Wichita at the home of her daughter, Ethel, after cancer surgery,
followed by a heart attack, at the age of 71 years, 8 months. Alfred died
April 16, 1959, in his sleep at his home, aged 83 years, 4 months.
