Otis Bell

Otis and Annie Robinson Bell were born in Ohio. Otis came west with his parents,
first settling in Missouri for a short stay and later, in 1867, came to Kansas. A
home was established under early day conditions near Eskridge in Wabaunsee County.
Here he had his early day schooling and grew to manhood. Here also, he met Annie
Robinson. She had come to Kansas in 1877 with her parents, William and Sarah (Zollars)
Robinson. Sarah died in 1881, and 17 year old Annie bacmae the homemaker for her
father and brothers, Dell and Will, as the older family members were married and
had remained in Ohio. In 1889 Otis and Annie were married and settled on a home-
stead adjoining that of Otis' father, James Bell. Four children were born to them:
James Robinson, Delano Ray, Jessie Louella and Hester Murial.
In 1908 the family moved to Isabel where other Bell relatives had settled earlier.
They found no good land available, but the town was badly in need of a meat market.
Otis opened his business in the thriving town and built a home for his family.
Otis drove through the neighboring farms to find cattle and hogs for his meat
market. When the purchains had been completed he and his son, Ray, would saddle
their ponies and drive the cattle to the feed lot behind the Bell home. During the
summer months he butchered a beef daily and three hogs a week. The fresh meat was
cooled by ice which arrived by train. The ice was packed in sawdust, and the 300
pound slabs were loaded in a drey and stored in the ice house.
Gradually a line of groceries was added to the meat market, fresh vegetables,
cookies, and candy being the first additions.
The family attended the Christian Church until 1911, then began attendance at
the Methodist Church. Annie was a member of the Ladies Aid and spent many hours
sewing and quilting in the Ladies Aid building behind the little church.
After Otis' death in 1931, his son, Bob, managed the store. He became owner in
1941 following Annie's death and continued to operate Bell's Market until his
retirement. He presently resides in Isabel.
Ray Bell retired after 52 years of service as rural mail carrier and moved to
  Harlingen, Texas.
Jessie married Stanley Swinson. They were owners of the drug store. Both died
in a car accident in 1971.
Muriel married Carl (Cotton) Hartman (deceased) and still resides on the original
  Hartman farm north of Isabel.
