Charles Bevans
Charles Francis Bevans was born on September 25, 1898 in Barber County,
near Gerlane. His father was Sherman L. Bevans, son of Charles Bevans and
Sarah Ellen Grubb. His mother was Josie Lee Forshee, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Forshee, also of Barber County.
Charlie lived all of his life in Barber County, farming the same ground
as had his father and grandfather before him.
On September 11, 1918, he married Hazel Blanceh Lyman, daughter of Peter
and Rebecca Lyman, also of Barber County. On June 2, 1919, a daughter was
born and named Marguerite Ellen. On August 30, 1922, Hazel died, leaving a
three year old daughter and her husband, Charlie.
On January 23, 1924, Charlie married Elma Springer, of Medicine Lodge.
He continued to farm near Gerlane and retired to Kiowa. Charlie died there
on May 8, 1968. He is buried near his family in New Liberty Cemetery near
Gerlane.
Marguerite married Arthur W. Saddler in May, 1947, and moved to Medicine
Lodge where Arthur died in 1957.
In 1959 she married Jack D. Nurse, son of a longtime Barber County family.
They now reside in Medicine Lodge. The Bevans farm is owned by the fourth
generation of the family.
