Jacob Newton Bibb
Jacob Newton Bib came to Barber County in the early 1880's. He was born July 6, 1859,
at Center Creek, Jefferson County, Missouri, the son of James and Serena Hall Bibb. He
swapped the original land he homesteaded in order to get the farm one mile east of
Sun City to have property adjacent to his sister, Nancy Jane Bib who married Bill
Cochran, and had settled near Sun City. The Bibb family were descendents of Benjamin
Bibb who was in Virginia before 1685.
Jacob Bibb lived on the farm. He married Mary E. Wedlon (a Swedish Immigrant
originally named Johnson). They had three sons, James Wortie born 1883 on the farm,
John Eben, 1884, and Jacob Rollie born in Lake City in 1893. Jacob's mother Serena
Hall Bibb lived on the farm in a building still standing on the family place. She is
buried in Lake City Cemetery.
In 1898 Jacob bought a house and grocery store in Sun City. He lived there for a
little over a year and then bought a store in Lake City. He sold the grocery store
in Sun City to Mr. Bissantz but rented the house to Mr. and Mrs. Gene Bullock. Shortly
after moving to Lake City, he moved to Coats and put in a general store and moved the
house from Sun City to Coats. He continued to operate the farm. He died in 1909 and
is buried in Coats Cemetery.
James W. Bibb lived on the family farm. He married Martha Kramer in 1914. They had
two children who survived. Evalin Mabel born in 1916 is now Mabel Thomasson living in
Shoals, Indiana, and James W. Jr. born in 1923 is now Kansas State Budget Director
and lives in Topeka.
James W. and Martha Bibb left the farm in 1928 and moved to Florida. No other
member of the family has lived on the farm but the close family ties to the farm has
kept it in family ownership. James W. Sr. died in 1948. Martha Bibb Dippel resides
in Pratt, Kansas.
James W. Bibb, Sr., was a photographer and the family has many pictures of Barber
County in the early days of this century. The film file has been copied by the Kansas
State Historical Society and one of his early pictures of Sun City has been used by
the Society to illustrate an article on early Barber County.
The family farm house is no longer on the place, having been moved to Medicine
Lodge. Only the small cabin occupied by Serena still stands on its original place.
Another member of the Bibb family was an early settler in Barber County. Jacob
Bibb's sister, Mary Ann, and her husband, Samuel E. Smith, settled near Lake City.
James W. Jr. married Ruby I. Jasper in 1945. They have made their home in Topeka
and have one son living, David Darryl, born in 1955. David has his under-graduate
degree from I.U. and his M.L.S. from Emporia. He is pursuing further graduate work
at K.U.
