Glenn Lonker Bloom
Glenn L. Bloom was born on the home farm 6 miles west of Medicine Lodge on Nov.
6, 1900, the only son of John V. and Nellie J. Bloom.
His early life was spent on this farm and adjoining rented land. His boyhood
days were occupied about the same as any country boy of that period. There were
hardships to be endured, or rather the lack of more pleasurable times enjoyed by
the boys growing up in more modern times.
All travel was done on horseback or by buggy or wagon drawn by horses. This
meant that young horses were broken to riede or drive each spring, which resulted
in injuries of many kinds as the young animals resisted being caught up from an
easy life in the pasture and forced to submit to man's world.
Along with his sisters Opal and Louise, he attended Doles Rural School and
graduated from the eighth grade in 1915, after which, he and Opal drove a horse
and buggy to Medicine Lodge for the four years of High School, graduating from
The Barber County High School in 1919. Later he attended Kansas University and
Kansas State Agriculture College.
He then engaged in farming and stock raising, producing purebred Duroc hogs
and Registered Hereford cattle. These animals were shown at the County Fair, the
State Fair, and the Kansas National Livestock Show at Wichita. During this period
he was active in the Barber County Hereford Association in sponsoring a number of
Purebred Hereford Sales.
He was married to Louise Wadsworth on July 24, 1932. They resided in Medicine
Lodge until 1936, when the ranch 3 miles south of town was purchased and their
home was established there. As soon as they became residents there, "G.L." was
elected to the school board of Dist. #17 and served continuously for 22 years.
He was quite active in 4-H activities during their first years, being the first
President of the County 4-H Council. When the first Government Farm Program came
into being, he served on the Township Committee, later serving as Chairman of the
then P.M.A. Committee for five years.
When the Hospital Building program got under way in 1947, he was appointed to
the original Hospital Board and has served continuously, being Treasurer of the
Board.
Glenn has been a member of the Methodist Church for over fifty years and in
January, 1977, was awarded recognition for having been a Mason for 50 years. In
addition, he has been a member of the Wichita Consistory for 30 years.
