Herman C. Borth
William Borth was born October 25, 1842, in Germany. He came to America and
settled and bought land section 9-34-11 north of Kiowa, Kansas. He went to
Wichita, Kansas, with a team of oxen and brought lumber to build the first
wooden frame house in Barber County. He died May 8, 1925, and is buried at
the Riverside Cemetery in Kiowa.
Herman C. Borth, son of William and Mary Borth, was born Nov. 26, 1879 in
the old dugout and rock house on the land near Kiowa. He was the first white
child born in Barber County on record.
Herman married Bertha Stainfield. They lived across Medicine River to the
east on land now owned by Bud Diel. There were four sons born to Herman and
Bertha. The first son, Harry, was accidentally shot and killed at the age of
sixteen. He is buried at the Riverside Cemetery. The other sons were Kenneth,
Raymond, and Donald. Kenneth is the only survivor.
Herman, Bertha, and three sons moved to eleven miles southwest of Stratford,
Texas, in 1929. He had enough mules to trade for two D-John Deere tractors.
Herman passed away in 1954. This is to the best of my knowledge. In September
27, 1978, we had a picture made of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Borth, Stratford, Texas.
Above us hung the ox yoke which Grandfather William Borth used when he hauled
the lumber from Wichita for the frame house.
