Harriet Hoss Brickey
Harriet Hoss Brickey came to a cattle ranch six miles north of Sun City with her parents,
H.E. (Hully) and Esther Hoss, and sister, Ellinor, in 1917. A brother Harold was born later.
She attended elementary school at Turkey Creek School, District 14, and taught the last
term there in 1941-42.
High school years were at Sun City Rural High School, followed by two years at Ottawa
University. The B.S. degree came the same year as her marriage to Curtis Brickey in 1940.
To Curtis and Harriet two children were born: James Hulbert, born in 1945, died in
infancy; Karly Lee was born in 1943. Karyl has her degree in nursing and married Dale
Schmutz in 1967. They have three children: Eric, Stephanie, and Todd Curtis.
Harried attained her Masters Degree and then her Specialist in Speech Pathology and
Audiology from Hays State University. She taught and worked in her speciality field in the
following schools: Barber County rural schools, Kinsley, Dodge City, Hutchinson, Wichita,
and Pratt.
Curtis died January 5, 1978. Harriet now resides in Wichita.
Upon returning to Barber County there is always the special thrill when one first sees
the red hills with their purple haze. It's even more beautiful when cattle are grazing on
those hills.
