Wertly Brock
One of Barber County's oldest residents was Katherine Goodner Brock. She was born
July 25, 1885, at Sedan, Kansas. On July 24, 1902, she was married to Wertly Brock.
He was born in 1880 near Independence, Kansas.
They lived in Attica, Harper County for a time, but came to work on the Stewart
Farm west of Sharon in 1923. There were 11 children, one dying in infancy. The
children attended Walstead and Central View schools, where Lena Thomas Neal was one
of their teachers. They all enjoyed holidays and weekend visits with aunts and uncles
at Harper.
Wertly helped with the building of the Sharon school building which burned in the
50's. Later he worked for Barber County Highway Department. He died in December, 1940.
A daughter, Evelyn was a diebetic and was hospitalized many times during her nine
year illness. She died at age 18 years. The Brocks were members of the Christian
Church in Medicine Lodge.
Katherine and Wertly moved to Medicine Lodge in the early 30's, and after her
husband's death, she made her home with her son Wayne. When she could no longer care
for herself, and at age 91, she made her home in Pennock Rest Home in Anthony, Kansas,
where she died in March 1979, at age 93 years.
The family were William, deceased; Ray, Joplin, Mo.; Earl, Bellflower, California;
Joe, Hazelton, Kansas; Kenneth and Wayne, Medicine Lodge. Daughters were Blanche (Mrs.
Walter Stienbarger0, Sharon; Opal (Mrs. Herb Marts), Junction City; and Jessie (Mrs.
Leon Houston), Harper. There are 31 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, and 8 great
greats.
Three children remain in Barber County. Blanche, born in 1910, and Walter, born
1905 to Sam and Belle Stienbarger, were married in 1928. Walter was a bricklayer. He
helped lay the pavement on Medicine Lodge Main Street. He later was an electrician for
Dickey Appliance. His sister Florence (Mrs. Walter Williams) is a Medicine Lodge
resident.
Blanche did her first cafe work for Mrs. Elmus (Alma) Gaunt who operated a cafe
during the pavement project. The oil play was just beginning in Barber County and cafe
business was good. Blanche has been involved in food service since 1929. She has had
her cafe in Sharon since 1970. Her specialities are her cinnamon rools and homemade
pies.
Walter and Blance had eight children: twins Lester, Medicine Lodge and Leslie,
Hutchinson; Helen Curl of Medford, Oklahoma; Thelma Elkins lives in Austin, Texas;
Samuel James deceased in 1936; Vernon lives in Sapulpa, Oklahoma; Carolyn Haddock makes
Sharon her home; and Larry lives in Sheridan, Oregon.
Kenneth and his wife Lois (McKeever) Brock are retired and live in Medicine Lodge.
Wayne (Bob) was born June 27, 1926. He has worked for National Gypsum, now Gold
Bond Products, since 1944. He also has done farm and yard work for many local families
and continues to live in Medicine Lodge.
