Charles E. Brown, Jr.

Charles Brown, son of Rev. Charles E. Brown, came to Barber County in 1927 along with
two brothers, Kenneth and Henry, when his father was appointed pastor of the First
  Methodist Church in Kiowa, Kansas.
His brother, Ken Brown, is buried in Kiowa, and his sister-in-law, Jean McBrayer-Brown
remains as his strongest link to Barber County.
Charles attended high school in Kiowa, graduating with the class of 1930. At that time,
George Stevens was the Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Sam Frazier was the Principal, and
Mr. Charles McBrayer was the President of the School Board.
He was graduated from Southwestern College in 1934 and was married to Ava Currier of
Dodge City, Kansas. In 1935 he was ordained an Elder in the Methodist Episcopal Church.
In 1936 the Charles Browns moved to Denver, Colorado, where he graduated from Illif
School of Theology with a Master's Degree in Theology in 1940. At this time he applied to
the Office Chief of Chaplains, US Army, for a commission in the Reserves. The Reserves
assigned him to duty with the 3rd Infantry Division stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington.
He reported for active duty in February 1941. In 1942 Chaplain (Captain) Brown, landed
with the 3rd Division when it invaded North Aftrica at Fedala.
He also served in North Africa with the newly organized 5th U.S Army under the Command
of General Mark Clark, which went on to Sicily and Italy.
Upon his return to the United States in 1946, he commanded the Chaplain Board at Fort
Ogelthorpe, Georgia; attended the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth,
Kansas; was the first Chaplain to attend the Army War College at Carlisle, Pennsylvania,
the Army Command Management School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia; and was the Commandant of
the US Army Chaplain School at Fort Hamilton, New York.
While Commandant of the Chaplain's School, as a Colonel, he was nominated by a board
of General Officers to President John F. Kennedy for appointment as a Major General to
fill the position of the Chief of Chaplains of the United States Army. President Kennedy
sent his name to the United States Senate for confirmation, which was accomplished.
At age 51, on November 1, 1962, he was promoted from Colonel to Major General and
occupied the position of Chief of Chaplains fo the Army. He was retired from the US Army
  31 July 1967.
Chuck E. Brown (Chaplain (Maj. Gen.) Charles E. Brown, Jr. US Army, Retired) lives
with his wife, Ava Currier-Brown in Los Gatos, California.
He is very proud of his Kansas heritage. His beloved Ava probably influenced his
success in life more than any other person, except for his father and the people of Barber
  County in Kiowa.
Charles Brown is a 33rd Degree Mason, Southern Jurisdiction. He holds Honorary Doctorates
from Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas, and Norwich University, Norwich, New Hampshire.
