John Brown
John Brown born in Gyorkony, Hungary, came to the United States when he was 17. He
and two other boys walked many miles to get to the border so they would be free to go
to Amsterdam, Holland, by train. At Amsterdam the travel agency made arrangements for
tickets to Akron, Ohio, where the others had relatives. John had an acquaintance who
had come a year earlier.
The ocean voyage was far from what John expected. Many times he told how he would
have given anything to turn the ship around and go home. Once getting to New York and
seeking the great Statue of LIberty holding her lighted torch, John felt much better,
at least until he came to customs gate. There he lacked $5.00 having enough money to
enter. A man behind him heard the plight and quickly came to the rescue.
John got a job in a rubber factory. Before returning to his native Hungary, his
mother wanted him to visit her schoolmate who lived in Harper, Kansas. After the
second year in Akron, John went to Harper, arriving there in late spring - just in time
for harvest. Working with the soil and live-stock was much more appealing.
World War I came along. All young men were being drafted, so John served in the Army.
United States declared war agains Hungary, and John was honorably discharged after 18
months. With the money earned in the Army he was able to buy a team of horses and some
machinery and start farming for himself.
In 1927 John bought land in the Hazelton area. He also took out naturalization papers
and became a citizen of the United States. Until that time John spelled his name Braun.
Being remineded of his homeland, John loved the Hazelton community and it people.
Each time he thought of returning for a visit the countries were at war. Finally in 1964
John's brother Miklos came to visit on a 3 month visa. Miklos marveled at the similarity
of the country to the native homeland.
John and Dorothy Bahr married in 1945. Dorothty was raised close to Gridley, Kansas,
attendeed Business school, and worked at Boeing Aircraft Factory at the time of marriage.
Eva Millicent was born in 1946. Later the family moved to Kiowa, and Millicent attended
the Kiowa schools. John passed away in 1965 and is buried in the Kiowa Cemetery. Dorothy
maintains the Kiowa home, keeping busy with Church work, Girl Scouts,a nd is Service
Chairman of the Barber County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Millicent married Larry Frieden, son of Myrtle Alberding-Frieden-Rathgeber. They have
two children, Linndy John and Cammi Suzette. They are a happy family, raising wheat and
grazing cattle ont he land her father loved in his adopted country. The farm is three
miles east of Hazelton.
The Frieden children are active in Kiowa schools, now called South Barber. Linndy is
very interested in any athletic activity, while Cammi's interests lie in 4-H, piano,
and dancing.
