Vernon C. Buell
Vernon C. Buell and his wife, the former Elizabeth J. (Betty) Bloom, met in Medicine
Lodge and were married May 23, 1959, in the Methodist Church. Vernon, the son of Everett
and Dorothy Buell, was born in Kinsley, Kansas, and has one sister, Jacqueline Stephens.
Their paternal grandparents are Harry Alva and Alice NOrton Buell; maternal grandparents
are Joe and Mary Medley Turner. Vernon's family moved to Medicine Lodge in 1948, and with
the exception of his college years he has spent the remainder of his life here. Betty,
the daughter of Glenn Lonker and Louise (Wadsworth) Bloom, was raised on the family farm
three miles south of Medicine Lodge; she has two older brothers, Dean and Charles, and
one younger sister, Marie Hanson. Their paternal grandparents were John Valentine and
Nellie Lonker Bloom; maternal grandparents were Frederick Jason and Florence Williams
Wadsworth/
Vernon and Betty were 1957 graduates of Medicine Lodge High School and spent the
following five years going to school and working in Wichita. Vernon received his B.A.
degree from Wichita University in 1962. During his college years, he played football for
W.U. and worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad as a switchman. This was the time
Vernon developed his avid interest in railroading and bib overalls!
While in Wichita, the Buells' first wo children were born, Lisa Marie on July 8, 1960,
and David Jason on August 3, 1962. Jack Andrew was born May 2, 1965, after the family
returned to Medicine Lodge.
In 1962 Vernon accepted a teaching position at the Medicine Lodge Intermediate School.
In 1963 he transferred to the high school, teaching int he mathematics and science
departments and coaching football and track. Vernon received his Master of Teaching degree
from Northwestern State College in Alva, Oklahoma, in 1965.
In 1967 the family moved into a home built by Everett and Vernon Buell.
Betty has devoted her married years to homemaking and active involvement in church,
school, club, and community activities. Vernon is a member of the Masonic Lodge, and Betty
is a member pf Monday Afternoon Club and PEO. All of the family are members of the United
Methodist Church.
Lisa, a 1978 graduate of Medicine Lodge High School, has continued her education at
Hutchinson Junior College; she is a pre-pharmacy major. David, a high school sophomore,
and Jack, an eighth gradeer, are active in school and athletic activities.
The Buells are proud to be a part of the heritage of Medicine Lodge and are confident
in the future.
