C.L. Cannon

My grandmother Younce was a Santa Fe agent and my dad, C.L. Cannon, who was also a
Santa Fe Agen, was sent to work at her station. There he met her three daughters and
married Ethel Younce in 1915. After moving several times, my parents, brother, Jack,
and I, finally settled in Hazelton, Barber County in 1925. In 1929 another brother,
  Harold Lee, joined the clan.
We had many enjoyable times meeting with friends and spending the evenings singing
and playing instruments. Dad enjoyed all kinds of music and sang in a quartette for
many years. We also had what was called Literary Meetings. We had programs at school-
houses or community buildings with different people participating, and the crowds
  were enormous.
Since we could have a pass on the railroad, all our vacations were by train. After
my grandmother moved to California, we would go there once or twice a year. Mother
would pack a big lunch when we left, and grandmother would fix us one for the return
trip. We always had plenty to eat, and the train did have drinking water. The trip
took two days and two nights one way. We got on the train right in Hazelton, and
the train stopped in Hazelton to let us off on the way back. In the summer it was
certainly hot going through the desert, as there was no air-conditioning. We were
able to visit relatives all over the country, though.
My two brothers both served in the U.S. Navy. Jack was at Pearl Harbor aboard a
battleship which was sunk by the Japanese during their infamous raid. He now lives
in California, and Harold Lee lives in Albany, New York.
I stayed in Barber County, still living in Hazelton. I was married in 1936 to
Howard Hoffman who was born in Hazelton. We had three children, Joe born in 1944,
Jay in 1947, and Kay in 1949. We had the telephone company and installed a dial
system in 1942, which was the first in the area. Howard was killed in 1956 during
a storm in Anthony. Three years later I married Clyde Q. Spicer who was born in rural
Hazelton. We had one son Clay Quinlan born December 9, 1960.
Joe married Sharon Schwartz in 1962, and they have two children, Danielle born in
1964, and Jay Howard born February 29, 1968. They live in St. Louis, Missouri. Jay
lives in San Francisco. Kay married Monte Blunk in 1969, and they have two daughters,
Mandi born in 1975, and Marinda born in 1978, and they live in Kiowa. Clay lives in
Hazelton and is continuing the farming.
We have enjoyed living in Barber County all these years, and when we go traveling
or visiting we are always glad to get back to Barber County, and especially to
  Hazelton.
