Margaret Herr Cantrell
Margaret Joyce Herr Cantrell, daughter of F. Floyd and Esther Herr, was born in
1938. She lived in Medicine Lodge until 1943, when her father left as superintendent
of Medicine Lodge schools and came to Topeka to be Secretary to the State Board of
Education.
She was a tiny little blond and very active.. Her father never found any
occassion to discipline her, except once, when she ran out into the street and a
truck was coming. To everyone's amazement, he picked her up and spanked her.
Her memories of Medicine Lodge include Doris and Hazel Parr, who lived next
door. They painted her fingernails a bright red when she visited them, or when
they babysat with her. She also remembers going to Grandma Jones' house and getting
great big sugar cookies. Grandma Jones was Esther Herr's mother and had moved to
Medicine Lodge to be close to her daughters, Esther Herr and Eunice Jones, a teacher.
Margaret has a BS and MS from Kansas State University, and a PhD from Ohio State
University at Columbus, Ohio, in Family and Child Development in Home Economics.
She is Professor of Early Child Education in Northern Kentucky University in Highland
Heights, Kentucky.
Her husband, Dr. Joe Cantrell, is Associate Professor of Chemistry at Miami
University in Oxford, Ohio.
Joe and Margaret have three boys and live on seven acres in Hamilton, Ohio, a
suburban area between the two Universities.
