Steve D. Carr
Steve Delmar Carr, the younger schild of Wendell A. and Imogene Sisk Carr was born
at Hardtner, Kansas, May 24, 1948. He and older brother, Tom, were raised on a family
owned farm-ranch operation in Deerhead Township. Steve attended Deerhead Grade School,
where the school's basketball team, coached by Wendell Carr, provided special memories.
In 1961 the family moved to Medicine lodge. Academics, sports and school, church and
community activities, including 4-H and DeMolay, occupied the Junior and Senior High
School years highlighted with Steve graduation Valedictorian of his class. He was also
selected as delegate to American Legion Boys State and both delegate and counselor to
the Kansas Farm Bureau Youth Citizenship Seminar.
Steve received a B. Arch. in Architectural Design in 1972 and BS in Architectural
Engineergin in 1973 from Kansas State University. He was a member of Farm House Social
Fraternity, College of Architecture Student Council, Tau Sigma Delta Honor Society in
Architecture and Allied Arts, Blue Key National Senior Mems Honor Fraternity. He was
the recepient of ACT State of Kansas, Air Force and Meyer-Raeburn Scholarships, and
the Alpha Rho Chi Medal for Outstanding Graduating Senior in the Department of Archi-
tecture.
On January 24, 1970, Steve married Nancy Ellen Garten at the United Methodist Church,
Medicine Lodge. Nancy was born at Hardtner, Kansas, on November 19, 1949. She and her
parents, Bill F. and Betty Jane Harbaough lived near Gerlane until moving to Cherokee,
Oklahoma, in 1952. They returned to a farm two miles north of Medicine Lodge in 1955.
Nancy has a younger brother, Jerry Edward. Nancy went to Grandview Country School for
four years and then transferred to Medicine Lodge. In high school, she was selected as
cheerleader, was a member of Order of Rainbow Girls and her senior year, served as MYF
President. During the summer of 1967, she attended the Missionary Education Tour which
visited the southeastern states.
Nancy obtained a two year Secretarial Certificate from Northwester State College in
Alva, Oklahoma. She served as a Resident Hall Assistant at South Hall and as Secretary
of the International Club. Upon course completion, whe was employed as a Secretary I in
Personnel Services at Kansas State University for almost four years. While at Manhattan,
she served as President of the KSU Dames Club.
Steve received a Regular Army Commission in the Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army in
September, 1973. Military training included the Engineer Officers Basic Course and
Engineer Construction Officers Course at Fort Belvoir, Basic Airbourne Training at Fort
Benning. Steve was assigned to the 43D Engineer Battalion (Construction) and served as
Company C Platoon Leader and Battalion Construction Engineer. In September 1976, Steve
resigned his Commission and accepted a position as a Structural Engineer with Bucher
and Willis, Consulting Engineers, Planners and Architects in Salina, Kansas.
They ahve two children, Shane Steven born September 13, 1974, and Stephanie Michelle
born January 19, 1976. Both children were born at Martin Army Hospital, Fort Benning,
Georgia.
