Stewart Carthrae

Stewart and Marion Carthrae have made their home in Barber County nearly all their
married life. Stewart was born and raised in Comanche County, where his grandfather
was a homesteader. He married Marion Wells in 1943, and after World War Two, joined
his father-in-law, Vernon Wells, in farming and ranching. The Wells ranch was purchased
around 1908 by Irving Wells, whose youngest son, Vernon, operated the ranch until his
death in 1969. Stewart and Marion purchased the ranch from the other heirs and continued
to operate it until 1977, at which time they sold to DNB Drilling Co.
There are four daughters in the Carthrae family. The girls enjoyed growing up in
Barber County. Some of their fond memories are of the Barber County Fairs and the
Indian Peace Treaty. Glenda, the oldet daughter, graduated from Medicine Lodge High
School and attended college at Northwestern State in Alva, Okla. She married Ronald
Sibley of Kiowa in 1969. They have three children and live in Wichita. Terry, the
second daughter, was graduated from Kiowa High School and Wichita State University.
She and her husband, Richard Stephens, were married in 1976, have two children and
reside in Wichita. Rita, the third daughter, graduated from Hardtner High School and
married Russel Graves of Hardtner in 1974, and they still live on the ranch were Rita
grew up. Russel now manages the ranch for DNB. Rita and Russel have two children, Kathy,
the youngest daughter, was in the first graduating class of South Barber High School.
She married Bud Winters, whose grandfather, Bill Winters, was a neighborn of Kathy's
grandfather, Vernon Wells, from the time they were young boys. Kathy and Bud were
married in 1975, have two children, and also live in Wichita.
After selling the ranch, Stewart and Marion purchased a home in Kiowa and enjoy
living there. Marion's mother, Florence Wells, also lives in Kiowa.
