Alvin Cavin

Alvin Cavin was born on January 17, 1905, in Alva, Oklahoma. He was the oldest of
six children of Jim and Carrie Cavin. The family moved to Barber County, four miles
south and one east of Isabel, when Alvin the only child was 18 months old. The
decision was made to move so that the family could be raised on the farm. The other
children, Alvin's brothers and sister are Leaford Hoyt, Opal Pauline, Everett Marcine,
D.A., and Harold Newton. They attended school south of Isabel, District #81, or Eldred.
Close neighbors were George Keimig, Charlie Thom, John Eckell, and John Dunham. They
were always ready to lend a hand to the Cavins by helping with butchering, farming and
  carpentering.
Farming was done completely with horses until 1919 when a Fordson tractor was
purchased, but horses were still used even after that. The family's first car was
purchased when Alvin was twelve. Larabee Hardware of Isabel was running a special on
  Model T Fords for $381.00.
Alvin's hobbies were working mules and riding calves. When he was growing up the
family always enjoyed taking in the local box suppers and literary. Alvin attended
high school at Isabel and played football.
Alvin and Mae Cook met when both were twenty-one, and the romance began when Mae
sent a Valentine stating, "You're a brick, I am building great hopes of being your
Valentine." They were married August 29, 1926, and remained in the Isabel area until
1944. All three of their children, Alvena, Dean, and Gretta were born in Alvin's
parent's home in Sawyer. Mae and Alvin both accepted Christ as their personal Savior
at a tent meeting in 1933 and joined the Baptist Church in Isabel.
In 1934 Alvin and his brother Leaford hauled dirt to the low spots when Highway 160
was being built. In 1934-35 they hauled cement from old bridges and elevators to go
into the dam at 99 Springs. In 1940 Clifford McCollough was hired to help Alvin for
  $1.00 a day.
In 1945 Mae and Alvin moved to Lake City to run the elevator, but due to health
problems, were forced to quit after six months. Alvin worked for the Medicine Lodge
Police Department and the city maintenance department. Mae worked as an aid at the
Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital several years. They still operate a small milking
  business.
Three of Alvin's brothers went into the ministry. Leaford married Genievieve Cook,
Everett married Anna Mae Evans, D.A. married Maxine Miller of Isabel, and Newt married
Margaret May Lucas of Nashville, Kansas. Opal married Wm. (Bill) Scheibe, Leaford is
  deceased.
Mae and Alvin's children: Alvina May married Clifford Byron McCullough of Nashville,
Kansas; Ferrell Dean married Betty Jo Honn of Attica; Gretta Faye is married to Claude
Winborne Jr. of Winnsboro, La. One grandson, Patrick McCullough, gave his live in
Viet Nam. They enjoy their grandchildren which include Mike and Jeff McCullough, Joel
and Sara Cavin, and Jim and Dell Winborne. Special pleasures are with their great-
grandchildren, Heather Winborne, and Buffie and Michael McCullough.
