Elam Thomas Chance


     Elam Thomas, son of Eli Pritchett Chance, born Feb. 22, 1833, in Kent County,
  Delaware, and Melinda Fleming, born September 11, 1840, in Scott County, Illinois,
  were united in marriage August 7, 1861. To this union two children were born,
  Elam Thomas, September 15, 1862, and Beatrice Ada, September 26, 1864.
     Elam Thomas (born at Pleasant Hill, Missouri and died at DeRidder, Louisiana,
  January 27, 1950) was united in marriage to Lizzie Mae Beieler (born December 9, 
  1874, at Springfield, Mo., and died Feb. 13, 1958, at Luddington, La.) on January
  26, 1891. They were married by Probate Judge Trunkey at Barber, Nebraska; both were
  residents of Red Cloud, Nebraska. Two children were born in Red Cloud, Mabel
  Emeline, Feb. 2, 1892 (d. Sept. 1956), and Donald Eli, July 2, 1894.
     In 1896 along with Elam's parents Mr. Mrs. E.P. Chance, they moved to Medicine
  Lodge, Kansas. They also brought 100 head of whiteface hereford cattle. They lived
  on a ranch north west of Medicine Lodge, later moving into Medicine Lodge. Here
  they reared their family of nine children: Andrew Murray, (b. Jan. 14, 1896, d. Dec. 
  29, 1945); Elam Thomas Jr. (b. Aug 9, 1897, d. Jan, 27, 1950); Douglas Fleming,
  (b. April 7, 1899, d. Jan 21, 1961); Rachel May, (b. Feb 25, 1902); Robert Bruce
  (b. April 21, 1906, d. Dec. 20, 1974); Mildred Naomi, (b. Jan 16, 1910); William
  Wallace (b. June 14, 1911, d. Sept. 1911); Leo Leroy, (b. July 9, 1913).
     Elam Chance was a business man and rancher. Later they moved to DeRidder, La.
  on Aug. 4, 1921, where they lived the remainder of their lives on their farm. Their
  bodies were returned to Medicine Lodge for burial in Highland Cemetery on the same
  lot with Elam's parents, brother, and son Andrew Murray.
     Elam's sister, Beatrice was married to James L. Snodgrass, May 9, 1885. To this
  union four children were born: Lora Leona, Feb. 13, 1888; Robert Eli, Jan 8, 1895;
  Nancy Matilda, Oct. 19, 1896; James LaFayett, Jan. 15, 1902.
     The information for his was taken from the family Bible and jotted down by Millie
  Chance, youngest daughter of Elam and Lizzie.
