E.P. (Bill) Chance
Elam Preston (Bill) Chance was born on October 13, 1925, the third son of Andrew
Murray and Hattie Turnage Chance. He was born in Medicine Lodge with Dr. Coleman
in attendance.
Bill attended school in Medicine Lodge, also Cimarron and Hays, Kansas. He was
quite active in track in all three school systems. The year he was a senior he joined
the United States Navy, February of 1944. While in the Navy he decided he wanted to
be a salvage diver and went to school in Pearl Harbor and became a deep sea diver. He
served 2 1/2 years in the South Pacific on a submarine fender, the USS Orion and the
USS Gilmore. After his discharge, he returned home and went into the oilfield.
On September 5, 1948, in Probate Judge Hilkey's office he was united in marriage
to Virginia Anne Mullikin, with Phyllis Mae Mullikin and Jack Kenneth Chance in
attendance.
Virginia Anne Mullikin was born June 28, 1933 at Montezuma, Kansas, the third
child of Edith Lurinda Woodward and Ben F. Mullikin. They moved back to Medicine
Lodge in 1935. Virginia attended school in Medicine Lodge and a short time in Wichita.
After their marriage they lived in Alva and Duncan, Oklahoma, and Perryton, Texas.
In 1952 upon the death of Bill's mother they returned to Medicine Lodge and bought
the home place and have lived there since.
To his union five children were born; Lurinda Lee, April 17, 1949; Elam Thomas,
February 16, 1952, died December 15, 1972; Michael Preston, July 23, 1953, died
January 30, 1955; Jerry Preston, January 3, 1959.
All of their children were baptized in The First Presbyterian Church in Medicine
Lodge of which they are members.
Bill is still in the oilfield, at this time a Tool Pusher (in charge of a drilling
rig), and Virginia is a homemaker.
