Jerry Preston Chance
Jerry Preston was born January 3, 1959, at Anthony, Kansas, with Dr. H.Y. Yasuda
in attendance. He is the fifth child and fourth son of E.P. Bill and Virginia Chance.
He arrived during one of the worst blizzards in years.
Jerry was a quite fat, loveable baby and, being the baby, quite spoiled by the
family. Being the youngest child, he was quite lonely when the other children were in
school and contented himself by playing with the animals; hide and seek with Tom's colt,
Snooper, was a favorite game of his. His family nicknamed him the Pied Piper of all the
animals on the place.
Jerry attended all his school years in Medicine Lodge, starting with Mrs. Joy Miller
as his kindergarten teacher and graduating in May of 1977. After graduation he received a
scholarship in Pole Vaulting at Dodge City Community College at Dodge City, Kansas. He is
now in his second year at Dodge and plans to graduate in May 1979.
During the summer months, Jerry worked for farmers doing tractor work and later
roughnecked for his brother, Tim.
Jerry was quite active in sports, summer baseball, swimming, and horseback riding at
the Roping Club. He is also an avid fisherman and hunter.
Jerry is still our Pied Piper of animals, having a calf that thinks she is a dog, and
a dog that thinks she is human, and all the horses following him.
