Ellen Williamson Circle

The Circle family emigrated from Virginia and West Virginia - the first members
of the family coming to Kansas in 1883.
They first located in Cowley County - later moving to Barber County. Ellen
(Williamson) Circle proved up on a claim three miles west of Hazelton with the
home site on a hill. Her son, Andrew proved up on one mile north and half west of her,
and John Circle had a claim directly south of Andrew's. Ed, a cousin, had land one
  mile north of Andrew.
Ellen's daughter, Lillie proved up on a claim a mile west of her mother and
another son, Duncan, tried to prove up on a claim near his mother's home, but could
not, as he was then under legal age, so sold out for $250. He later proved up on a
claim in Comanche County, then returned to Barber County, bought Andrew's quarter
  and settled there.
John, Ed, and Duncan enlarged their holdings to such an extent that almost the
entire locality was owned by some member of the Circle family. Therefore, when school
district no. 59 was formed it was called "Circle District". This district has since
beenincorporated into the Kiowa School District.
