Reese Clark Jr.
Mr. and Mrs. Reese Clark Sr. came to Harper, Kansas in 1883, taking the stage line
to Barber County, purchasing an unimproved quarter section of land one mile south
and three west of Hazelton, Kansas.
With no premises, in the meantime they lived in a dugout east of the Rose Hill
Cemetery, Hazelton, Kansas until a house was built to live in. This was finished in
the Spring of 1885.
In the fall and winter of 1885 and 1886 they moved to Harper County temporarily
to feed cattle. In the Spring of 1886 they moved back to the farm.
A family of six children were born and raised on this farm. I, Reese Clark Jr.,
the youngest of the family, stayed home and helped my father farm. Father passed
away in 1930 and I then took full control of the farm and helping care for my mother.
I married DeAlva McCune October 10, 1937, at Cherokee, Oklahoma. We continued to
live on the place and care for my mother.
In the fall of 1938, Mother decided to move to town where she lived until she
passed away January 1, 1950.
In the fall of 1951 we bought the farm and continued on with farming, raising
cattle, hogs, chickens, milking cows, raising garden, row crops and wheat. We also
ran a threshing machine.
I had started running the threasing machine when I was 15 years old and continued
on until 1959.
I was also a member of the Moore township board for 18 years. We topped the cattle
market in Kansas City three years straight.
A daughter, Carol Sue, was born September 29, 1944. In October 1951, we built a
new house and made other improvements on the place. In the spring of 1952 we won the
Balanced Farming and Family Living Award in recognition of our outstanding progress.
Our daughter attended grade, high school and college and majored in Home Economics.
She was also a great leader in 4-H work.
Our daughter married a farm boy, David Meyer from Cheney, Kansas on September 3,
1966.
In 1968 my health began to fail, my wife and I moved to Kiowa, Kansas, and our
daughter and son-in-law moved to the farm. They are carrying on and keeping the place
in number one shape.
Two girls were bornto them, Sherril Elisa, on May 25, 1962, and Loretta Lynn, on
March 28, 1966.
I, Reese Clark Jr. was the 2nd generation to manage the farm, now Carol and David
are 3rd and Sherril Elisa and Loretta Lynn 4th generation. We hope the generations
will continue with the farm.
