Charles Clarke

About 200 guests came to witness and celebrate the marriage of Charles Arthur
Clarke, the son of Dale and Donna Clarke of rural Medicine Lodge, to Hannah Louise
Mills, daughter of Govan and Margaret Mills of rural Lake City, in the First
Christian Church of Medicine Lodge on February 15, 1959, where both of them had
become baptized members of Christ's family in earlier years.
Charles and Hannah were hgih school sweethearts, having both attended Medicine
Lodge High School, so it was no surprise after Charles attended college at Fort
Hays State and Hannah went to Kansas State University that they should decide to
marry and continue their education together at Fort Hays, Charles majoring in
Agri-Business and hannah majoring in Home Economics and secondary education. They
would attend school during the winter months, returning home during vacations and
the summer to the Clarke farm where Charles was actively engaged in farming and
  raising cattle.
On May 28, 1961, little Miss Linda Louise (after attending nine months of
classes with her mother) arrived the Sunday morning of Hannah's baccalaureate
service for her graduation. Ten days later (with the help of both Charle's and
Hannah's mother), Charles, Hannah and Linda returned to rural Medicine Lodge to
become permanent residents. Their first permanent home was the one vacated by Pop
and Grandma Nelle when they moved to Medicine Lodge to live at 405 West Central.
It was while living in this home 8 miles west of Medicine Lodge on Sand Creek
that Julie Anna arrived to bles the family on August 19, 1963. Charles still
reminds Julie that she kept him from attending a horse sale that day.
In 1964 Charles had the opportunity to purchase the farm ground which he had
been leasing from his Great-Uncle Jim and Great Aunt Anna Clarke, and Hannah
started teaching that fall at the Intermediate School in Medicine Lodge. After
teaching 2 1/2 years, she had to quit for health reasons.
After extensive remodeling, the red brick, two-story house on the Medicine
River, which Great Uncle Jim Clarke had had build when he was a bachelor over a
half century before, became the home for Charles and Hannah and their two small
daughters in August of 1966. On March 21, 1968, Cindy Sue ushered in the first
day of spring with her arrival.
The year Linda went to first grade marked the beginning of the bus routes for
our rural areas. Charles was a school bus driver for several years.
Charles continued to expand his farming and cattle operation, but after the
birth of Sue Ann on June 24, 1973, Cheryl Kay on August 15, 1975, and Carol Jean
on November 11, 1977, he jokingly refers to his Girls' Ranch.
Charles and Hannah ahve been active members of the Barber County Cattlemen and
Cowbelle, each having served several years as secretary-treasurer of their
respective organizations. Charles is presently on the Mingona Township Board and
the Agricultural Extension Council. The entire family is active in the Christian
Church at Medicine Lodge. Charles serving as a deacon and he and Hannah together
helping to sponso youth groups and activities, Hannah teaching SS classes, being
VBS director, and each of the children being active in SS and their respective
  youth groups.
