Dale Clarke

Dale Clarke is the son of Wm. and Josephine (Strickland) Clarke. His wife, Donna
(McKaig) is the daughter of Ernest and Nelle (Shanks) McKaig. Both are native to
Barber County, and Medicine Lodge has always been the center they call "Home".
Dale attended school two years at No. 10 district west of Medicine Lodge, then
the family moved to Mingona district and he finished grade school there, attending
high school at MLHS. Donna started school at Canema district southwest of Union
Chapel. The McKaigs live in the Bud Hall farm. In 1921 the family moved to Mingona
Township northwest of Medicine Lodge. About this time Mingona had a new building.
Miss Kittie Schmidl taught there 20 years. At one time there were two teachers and
40 students. The hgihlight of the school term was the spring festival, it consisted
of chorus, duets, solos, and a track meet.
Donna and brother, Kenneth ahd to go two miles to school. They drove a cart
pulled by their favorite horse "Byron". He knew how to walk on the icy river, many
times during the winter. Mother heated bricks to keep their feet warm. When they
finished eighth grade, they went to high school in Medicine Lodge.
Living in Mingona Township was a pleasure for it not only had the best school in
the county, it had a church. Sunday school and church were held in the afternoon.
It was convenient for the residents living in the area. Ministers from the various
churches took turns coming to conduct the services.
There was the Forest City picnic each year for 3 days. Each family of the
community had a part to prepare for this. They all camped out overnight, cooked huge
amounts of food - slept very little. They went various places like Hell's Half Acre,
Natural Bridge, Salt Plains, Turkey Creek, Elm Mills, and finally 99 Springs.
Donna and Dale were married in 1935 by Rev. Miles of the Methodist Church. Two
children, Charles Arthur and Esther Frances, were born. Both graduated from MLHS.
Charles attended Fort Hays State Chollege. He chose Hannah Mills (daughter of the
Govan Mills) for his wife. They have six daughters: Linda, Julie, Cindy, Sue Ann,
Cheryl and Carol. They live west of Medicine Lodge.
Esther attended Kansas State College at Manhattan, Kansas. She chose Gary Hudson,
of Dequin, Ill., for her husband. They have a daughter, Laurie, and live in Haysville,
  Kansas.
