Paul Clayton

Paul Garnett Clayton, youngest child of Garnett and Pauline (Fowler) Clayton, was
born March 20, 1951, Wellington, Kansas. Paul grew up on the family farm four miles
east of Bluff City in Sumner County. He shared the privilege of being reared in a
Christian home with a brother and three sisters. His brother, John, with his wife
and family, are missionaries to France. Paul's sisters are Janet Lindwall, Valera Jo
Hardesty, both of Hutchinson, Kansas, and Mary Kay Bertwell of Lawrence, Kansas.
Paul's formal education began in a one room school. Later he attended the Bluff
City School. He graduated from Argonia High School in 1969. Following high school
graduation Paul began preparing for the ministry. He attended Baptist Bible College
at Springfield, Missouri, starting in the fall of 1969.
During his years at BBC, Paul met the young lady who was to be his wife. Kathleen
Ann Caldwell, daughter of Elmer and Marie (Kinney) Caldwell, was born February 2,
1951, at Snyder, Texas. Kathy grew up in Midland, Texas. She attended school there,
graduating from high school in 1969. Kathy has an older sister, Jerry Etheredge, and
  an older brother, Jim Caldwell.
As with all His children, the Lord worked in Kathy's life in many ways. During her
senior year in high school, a malignancy was discovered in Kathy's arm. She went to
Houston, Texas, and was the youngest patient to have received a treatment which was
completely unique at the time. This treatment is now widely accepted and used.
Desiring to be better prepared to serve the Lord, Kathy enrolled in BBC in January
1970. On August 7, 1971, Kathy Caldwell and Paul Clayton were united in marriage. Paul
graduated from BBC in 1972. He also attended Evangel College in Springfield. In 1973
Kathy graduated from BBC and Paul from post-graduate school at BBC.
In July 1973, Paul accepted the call to pastor the First Baptist Church in Medicine
Lodge. With his farm background and experience, Paul has a special rapport with the
rural and small town communty he serves.
The Claytons have been blessed with a famly during their time in Medicine Lodge. A
daughter, Sarah Ann, was born January 7, 1975, Medicine Lodge. A son, Seth James, was
born September 11, 1976, Medicine Lodge. Another son, Luke Caldwell, was born July 17,
1978, Harper, Kansas. They Claytons lived in the old parsonage on East Washington until
May 1976, when a new parsonage was purchased at 905 Goodview.
Under Paul's leadership the church has undergone several changes. The main auditorium,
foyer, and nursery have been finished with carpet and paneling. A new fellowship hall,
kitchen, and classrooms have been built over the basement. The church is very fortunate
to have a pastor who is also a willing carpenter, brick layer, and all-around handy man.
Although the last to claim credit, Paul was responsible for much of the real work on
  these projects.
The Lord has used Paul's genuine love for his congregation and communtiy to bring
about not only growth in building, but also in missionary endeavors and a deeper sense
of Christian community within the church. Paul shared int he fellowship of Ministerial
Alliance, serving in various capacities. The Clayton family are a blessing to their
  "Chosen Land."
